To acknowledge the shortcomings in one's own camp (I assume you're a Democrat. I am not.) is not only allowed. It's also advisable. That doesn't make me a Russian bot. That's one of the things that makes liberalism better than conservatism. People don't know what they don't know. Americans are among the most isolated people in the world. We do believe in American exceptionalism and have gotten smug as the world's only superpower for three decades. We took the incredible achievements and victory of WWII and gradually morphed them into what we have now. We're isolated geographically, culturally, politically, and linguistically. We only consume our food, our music, our films, our television, our clothing, etc. We're so vast in area that although there are regional differences throughout the country, they are few and relatively minor compared to the differences between different countries. A person can drive for five days in the US and speak English and eat American food the entire time. In Europe, you can drive for a couple hours in any direction and be in a place that has a completely different language, history, architectural style, customs, culture, laws, cuisine, etc.

Europeans roll their eyes or laugh when I describe a typical American workday and work year. I think I have been asked at some point by every single Scandinavian person who knows me well enough to ask why we work ourselves to death. I always answer that it's because we have to be the best. They take two months off every year and work about six hours a day. They have as much quality of life as we have, are happier than we are, and are wealthy. They're just not number 1; and they don't care. When I even suggest that the US isn't the best in everything, some American usually tells me I'm unpatriotic and that I should go back to where I came from if I don't like it here. I love the US, but I find many Americans to be insufferable because of their ignorance and their misplaced superiority. And for what it's worth, I think it's a crime that Americans are not forced to learn a second language in school. Until a person knows more than one language, I think it's not very easy to completely understand language, which is why so many Americans can't even speak English even though it's the only language they know.

I've had the same experience regarding being told I should just leave. IMO the highest form of patriotism is looking at your country with open eyes and an open mind, seeing the things that need fixing, and working together to address those things.

When I graduated from h.s., if you were college-bound, you were required to take two years of a foreign language in h.s. Even today some universities require their BS majors to take at least one. My son-in-law graduated from the University of Vermont last year with a bachelors in mathematics. He had to take one, so he choose French. Yet my husband, who graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in engineering, in the 1970s, did not. He knows at least a dozen computer languages, has created two, but has no desire at all to learn another human tongue. I guess it's hard for me to understand this because I have loved foreign languages since I was a little kid. I even made up my own dictionary using words borrowed from around the world, including Native American words. I've had three years of German, one each of Russian and Spanish, and two years of Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe). Yet I am but the grasshopper. :~)

Why on Earth do you think that many RWers believe that our universities and public schools are hotbeds of liberalism? If they were, wouldn't they be encouraging learning other languages, other cultures, and teaching the students to think of themselves as citizens of the world rather than just one nation?
