there is historical distrust of each other and rivalry. It's a forced partnership -Russia does not intend to partner with losers.....they have given up on the West.....the future is the Empire...and they got in early....the empire gives the best deals to those who come first.

It might have been inevitable but the Russians were hoping for a much better deal, maybe something like the French/German deal where while Germany is the stronger they agreed to play like the French were their equals. That went away with how we treated Russia, with the collapse of America, and with Europe hobbled with several existential threats.....Russia's ability to use the potential to side with the West to drive a decent deal with China went away, Russia was forced to agree to be a very junior partner to the Chinese...and now it is set. As for the historical problems so long as China is smart enough to let bygones be bygones and treat Russia with respect those no longer matter, there is only one direction, forwards.
