It is that the electoral college was installed to appease the slave states and get them in the union. You do not know it, but slavery was outlawed. The electoral college has no need to exist. Repubs tried to get rid of it several times in history until they found it helps them win elections they lost. Now they love it and call it patriotic.

I have seen studies showing distributing electoral votes proportionately (by congressional district) would have elected more presidents who won the electoral votes but lost the popular vote. The study is a few years old and I don't know if updating it would increase or decrease that result.

This picture says it all. It's all about the Democrats wanting to dominate presidential elections based on their numbers in just three states: California, Illinois, and New York. They know they would have the popular vote there and to hell with the rest of the country. That would mean that presidential elections would come down to pandering to just a few states you could count on the fingers of one hand. The rest of the country wouldn't matter.

How "fair" is that?

It takes away the last bit of representation that smaller populated states have, placing the large population centers priorities first, foremost, and only. At that point, there's no reason left for smaller populated states to be a state of the union.

And, this can be clearly seen in California or New York where the urban areas dominate while the rest of the state crumbles in decay and relative poverty. The rural areas just aren't important to the Democrat politicians running things. They don't produce enough votes to mater to those in power.
