Commentary: GOP's "small government" talk is hollow

Very true, and with right center civil libertarian you get judge candidates that act like the 9th Amendment does not extend rights NOT ENUMERATED. Conservatives are horribly afraid of the 9th amendment because it might give people more freedom to do things like have sex with same sex partners, or seek medical treatments without interference from the government. Both right and left "civil libertarians" are willing to exclude rights they don't like and ignore amendments that don't care for. A pox on both their houses.

so you're saying that you think libertarians suck?

No I am saying that a consistent libertarian would find that the 2d and 9th amendment are equally valid. That the 2d means just what it says as does the 9th. However, the 9th, if correctly interpreted means there are far more rights, including a right to privacy, than those on the right want to admit.

k, i'd agree.

False dichotomy.

A false dichotomy is trying to say CATO is equivalent on the right to the ACLU on the left and you know it.

Can't quite figure out your vested interested in labeling CATO as "right-wing conservatives" (other than the obvious attempt to disqualify them) when you know many positions they hold are in opposition to 'right-wing conservatives'.

They're right wing conservatives on economic issues. Good enough?

Fair enough. They're right wing conservatives on economic issues. Good enough?

Definitely. I stated that earlier. In fact I don't even know if that is fully true because they believe in freer markets and less regulations than most right-wing conservatives. However yes, CATO's economic beliefs are definitely on the right.

here's the problem with you refusing to see beyond left and right. Libertarians believe in as little government interference as possible. This SHOULD be understood as not infringing on any and all rights of the individual.

Why is it that those on the left and right ridicule Libertarians because they believe in totally minimal government on all accounts?

Can't speak for those on the right, but it results in stupid horribly inefficient results that ignore practical reality.

It's easy to be consistent, particularly when your policies will never be adopted by anyone anywhere.

There are, however the power over those rights is given either to the state or to the individual in the 10th, which is also equally valid.
