So long as we continue to ignore the employer that purposefully hires them to undercut the cost of hiring citizens we'll continue to have the problem.

I think there is a very definite place for the migrant worker in the US. The Guest Worker Visa programs have worked out well. Its just a numbers game.

I have seen our subcontractors try and hire american labor. Its pretty sad what is out there. Try coming up with 15 or 20 guys willing to use a shovel all day.
 
I think there's a clear distinction between saying that enforcement of our present immigration laws is un-American and saying that the manner of our present enforcement activities is un-American.

The subs we have paid between $500 and $750 a week. That works out to between $12.50 and $18.50 for a 40 hour week. If you can't live on between $26k to $39k a year, maybe you ought to have a skill?


Safety managers don't make too much. The job should not exist at all. Adults should have sense enough not to do stupid things and get hurt or killed. So we have to have safety managers (my title is Safety Director - sounds more official, don't you think?) to keep idiots from killing themselves or other people.

It was a rhetorical question. In other words, get a skill and earn a better living. But, for perspective, some of those laborers make more than a teacher with 4 years of college.

I have been doing this for about a decade. A significant part of what we do is aerial line construction. I have had to shut 20 or 30 crews down in that time. These are not men who take advice well or listen to the rules when it means they have to do things differently or take a little more time to do it safely. They get paid by how much they get done. Any slow down is lost money in their mind.

But I have had plenty tell me they are glad I did what I did. There have been too many deaths and serious injuries over the years. I am proud to say that we had no lost time accidents in 2007 and only 1 in 2008. Another company that is about the same size as ours had 2 deaths and 12 lost time accidents last year.

You think pamphlets and advice make the difference? You obviously have not spent time working in the real world.

Oh STFU, you moron. There's only one way to enforce laws. The conevience and comfort of the law breaker is not a concern. They could always try not breaking the law. There are legal means.

It's easier for me to go rob a bank than to save and get an education and then a job. How could you fault me for robbing the bank?

I understand, you're burned out. And behind the times, with all the newfangled safety innovations. It ain't like it was when you were making your bones.

I make my bones every day. I earn my pay and provide a valueable service.

But you keep talking like you know what you are talking about. One day you won't just be asking "Paper or Plastic?"
