At least 50 dead in 'mini tsunami' after dam bursts in JakartaSophie Tedmanson
A 10-foot high “mini tsunami” crashed through a neighbourhood in Jakarta, killing scores of people and leaving hundreds of homes submerged in the Indonesian capital after a dam wall burst in the early hours of Friday morning.

The wall of water tore through the crowded neighbourhood in Cirendeu, an industrial area on the outskirts of south Jakarta, killing at least 50 people, including four children.

An official said most of the dead had drowned in the flash flood, and the death toll was expected to rise as many people were sleeping when the disaster occurred and were unable to escape.

"Hundreds of houses are flooded, tens of houses damaged, it was like a small tsunami," Rustam Pakaya, an official at the health ministry, said.

Another local official, Danang Susanto, said the dam burst at 2am local time (1900 Thursday GMT).

"But before that there was heavy rain and wind, many trees were uprooted. People were still sleeping and couldn't do anything," said Susanto.

Rescuers today waded through chest-deep water and used rubber rafts to search for survivors who may be trapped in their houses. A dozen people remain missing, while up to 20 people were reported to have been treated at nearby hospitals

In some places water levels reached roof tops and bodies were seen floating alongside chairs, clothing and other debris amid the murky brown water in the flooded neighbourhood. Telephone lines were toppled and some cars were swept hundreds of feet away.

Some residents living near the dam, which was used to retain water in Lake Situ Gintung in Tangerang District, southwest of Jakarta, were reported to have heard sirens before the water hit.

"It was just like a mini tsunami," said Minu, the oldest daughter of Seto Mulyadi, the head of the national commission for children's protection.

Her father said the water smashed all the windows and doors of the family home while his wife and four children were sleeping upstairs. They were woken by the sounds of a commotion outside and screaming people.

Minu said: "They were shouting: ‘the water's coming in, the water's coming in’, and our dogs were barking. I could hear a banging on the door, and I thought, who's there? But it turned out to be the water."

Mr Mulyadi said the flash flood destroyed his house: “My house is a dreadful mess ... Thank God my family is safe.”

Health Ministry Crisis Centre chief Rustam Pakaya said the decades-old dam completely destroyed some houses and inundated at least 400 others.

The 32-foot-high dam was holding back around 70 million cubic feet of water at the Pesanggrahan river. It was built up to a century ago, while Indonesia was still under Dutch colonial rule.

Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the accident, although it is believed heavy rains caused the dam to first overflow and then, because the foundation was not made of concrete, to burst.

No its caused by golbal warming
Which has been directly linked to the increase in pie charts and graphs, especially those in power point presentations. I'd create a chart for you showing how as pie charts and graphs increased in business use that global warming increased, but I'd be causing global warming and then I'd be a hypocrite.

BTW it's because conservatives cut taxes and didn't fund the dam enough - CLEARLY

Personally I've long been a critic of the GOP and the vast conservative conspiracy (aka the "private sector") over their refusal to provide sufficient tax payer funds for damns in Jakarta, the heartless pricks.

Lame attempt.
Is the dam owned privately? Because that is what Conservatives would want and you would have no dispute over funding, if it burst then you could sue them which would be the strongest deterrent to keeping it safe.
Government has little incentive to be accountable if the dam is public, who would you blame for this, some faceless nameless bureaucrats who are just going to point fingers at each other or the usual lack of funding (no matter how well or not they were funded)?

LOL

Cool, floating dead people. Ain't Jakarta Obama's hometown where he went to that radical Muslim school as a kid. Guess he will be sending a few billion to help rebuild.

Just an observation, but, I *think* that the author of this thread was making an attempt at humor with this topic since it would be rather unimaginable that anyone would honestly believe a particular political party or ideology is to blame under the circumstances described in the article that was posted.

Now if he/she went about blaming god for it that would be a whole different story since everybody damn well knows god doesn't give a damn about dams (even dams in Jakarata) and takes particular delight in bursting them for the hell of it. :cof1:

Well, apparently you didn't realize that God is a conservative who is against gay marriage. It's still our fault.

Republicans have no problem with killling babies. It is just collateral damage.

That's true but at least they don't have a propensity to eat the corpses afterwards like Democrats do and don't even get me started on the injustice of taxing the unfortunate victims estates. :)

True I didn't realize that, but then again God hasn't yet seen fit to share it's political ideology or even deigned to explain where it stands on economic theory, apparently I'm to be left to my own devices to figure such things out. :(

I tend to just listen to what the lefties say is "evil" about conservatives. I then know what God thinks about things. It's more accurate than having conversations in the shower with Himself.

Oh I know it was an attempt at humor, he was doing satire about me, hence my opening comment about it being a lame attempt.
You're new here, Waterdork and I go way back, once upon a time if you can believe it he used to be a Libertarian or at least he thought he was, he never really understood it but you know you don't criticize people who are on your side and now he pretends that he rejects what he thinks he knows Libertarianism as.

I take his sad attempts at ridiculous blaming satire that he thinks I do indiscriminately and answer them with some seriousness just so he doesn't get away thinking that my posts on blaming Liberals are without thought out reason like his are.

I'll give credit where credit is due , you must be smarter than me then, since most of the left wingers that I know claim the mantle of "liberal" (yet the concept of liberty seems to escape them) making "lefties" somewhat hard to identify and there are so many "conservatives" that claim to speak for god (which makes me believe god really needs to do some housecleaning in the Human Resources department) that I get all confused over the subject of what, if anything god might think about any given subject. :)

I am a fiscal conservative. I think both parties have been screwing you tools for a long long time. Ever since Ike.

They con people into believing that 'cutting the amount of deficit spending' is a 'good thing'. Notice how they never talk about eliminating it all together (except for in extreme cases)? Notice how they never talk about actually LOWERING the national debt fiscal year over year?

As for this story... dont blame me... its that witch mother nature that keeps jacking with you. Quite the sadistic woman that one.

I couldn't have said it any better myself.
