Tea Party protests high taxes, 'failed' government

In 1773, a small group of dissatisfied American colonists dumped tea into the Boston harbor to protest King George III's taxation without representation.‘

More than two centuries later, at least 300 unhappy local taxpayers gathered on the Buffalo waterfront to protest a variety of similar issues, including generous state pensions and high taxes throughout the state, and to demand government reform in Albany.

"Our government has failed us," said Joanne Snyder of Grand Island. "I'm tired of having to eke out a living."

Snyder was among hundreds of protesters who attended the "Western New York Tea Party" this afternoon at the Buffalo Harbor. The event was to let Albany know that residents are not happy with the way things are run at the state capital.

And when co-coordinator James Ostrowski asked the crowd to make donations that will help the movement distribute fliers and pamphlets to every household in Erie County, dozens of adults, children, and senior citizens — some in wheelchairs — stormed the podium.

The group raised $2,000 on the spot, said Jill Sinclair, a co-coordinator.

"Absolutely incredible. I did not expect a single dollar today," said Ostrowski, a local attorney.

The pamphlet, which is a study of market economics, will be distributed door-to-door beginning next week.

While today's tea party focused on state government, another Western New York Tea Party will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on April 18 at Club W, 199 Delaware Ave., to focus on the federal government.

Think they aren't focused?

Yes. Pamphlet distribution. Nothing major, just the same kind of materials that got people inspired to participate in the American Revolution.

Yep. What everyone is missing. Way more organized than a month ago, less than a month forward.

The Revolutionary War was about taxation WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. Not about taxation above the level that the fringe right deems acceptable. If the fringe right present at these mockeries of the Boston tea party want to follow the founders, they will CHANGE THEIR REPRESENTATION (which isn't going to happen, because they're the fringe fucking right and no one listens to them), rather than start a violent revolution to impose their will on the majority of Americans who support the stimulus.

I would think that the folks at FreedomWorks orchestrating these things would have plenty of money to support the cause without hitting up children for cash.

Unfortunately, this country is full of willful idiots who seem to enjoy massive government. Afterall, the government is benevolent and good, unless its the "other" party thats running the show.

The duopoly has blindfolded the public, and the public has willfully allowed it.

Yes you. John Q. Public.

Idiot. The colonists had representation. The British monarchy had appointed seats to represent the colonies in the Parliament. The colonists felt, with some justification, that they were not FAIRLY represented considering their political power comparative to their percentage of the population. Conservatives have a a similar gripe now, though with less justification IMO.

They have as much representation, and as much power w/ their vote, as Democrats & Independents do.

This whole thing is such sour grapes; they have every right to do it, but for goodness' sake. So they don't agree with the decisions being made right now - time to start re-tooling the ol' message, and appealing to a majority of voters again.
