Yeah, these days, you're probably right. All those who I know who served in years past aren't as hateful. Even the Nam vets who frequent our gun club didn't have the hate for Clinton when he signed the "assault weapons" ban when I shot competitions with them.

I don't know about hate but I just don't like the idea most people seem to hold that because someone served they know what they're doing in public service.

Some join for all the "free shit" the military offers and would hide the moment "the shit hits the fan" if this country was invaded.

That said, there are still the Americans like Pat Tillman who gave up a career playing football (and ultimately his life) to fight for this country. Dutch Uncle is NOT one of them.

First, that's a lie. Second, are you jealous I don't thank your threads? Guno hasn't ever attacked me. He seems to go full-on obnoxious racist only to full-on obnoxious racists. I've posted a several times that two wrongs don't make a right (not exactly news to most people) and mentioned it directly to him a couple times.

Guno has never attacked me and has often thanked my posts and threads denouncing racism and bigotry as detrimental to the best interests of the nation. You are free to claim that's hypocritical, but I disagree. We can discuss it more if you like.

A fair point. Four years in the military doesn't make one a good leader and serving 20 years isn't a guarantee a person is good leader. LTC Larry Brock has proved retired military officers can go nutjob crazy just like anyone else.

That said, like being on a sports team, being in the military teaches both the value of teamwork and that all members of the team, regardless of assigned task, a important to the success of the team and the mission. Every Medal of Honor recipient was able to serve our nation because someone supplied him with water, food and ammunition and replaced equipment when necessary. Someone trained him, chopped his orders, tracked his pay and leave, and updated him on current intelligence. So it goes for all of our men and women on the front lines.

Most people in such situations learn a level of mutual respect for others, no matter how different in culture and skin tone, because all that matters is the mission. Not political or social bullshit shared on political forums.

That isn't a guarantee but such teamwork oriented people often make better leaders than selfish assholes who think "Fuck you, I got mine".

The way it has worked throughout history, is that fundamentalists are always trying to force society back to the way they believe it was 50 or 60 years ago. It almost never was the way they thought it was 50 or 60 years ago. The interesting thing to me is that fundamentalists move forward as generations die, but they are always 40 or 50 years behind the progressives.


We always have a group pushing for progress, and a group trying to push back. All it takes is for a generation to die for the small step forward to happen. Almost nobody is fighting to go back to the pre-Civil War days, but for a generation after the war there were plenty of people fighting for that.

Much fewer people are pushing to go back to the Vietnam era, they were pushing for that in the 80s. Even more recently most of America has accepted homosexuals and legalization of many drugs, but we have a significant number pushing to go back still, we will until they die. 15 years from nowAlmost nobody will push for that anymore.
 
It was only 15 or 20 years ago that the fundies finally gave up on saying Women should not work out of the home.
