murder rates by country

Maybe it's a symptom of your advanced civilization?

You have perfected the art of killing each other.

Of course the average American does make a much easier target in terms of size and mobility so you could be accused of "cheating", in a strict interpretation of the rules of murder, but i'm going to be magnanimous and not make a fuss about it.

your country envy is obvious

We can learn a lot from Britain. Their police don't have guns, the citizens don't have guns.

They have many fewer crimes than America and also don't have the barbaric death penalty.

I'm a fickle sort. Last week i woke up and wanted to be Tahiti but this week i have to admit i'd love to be San Marino.

If i really envied America i'd just move there. There are planes that go there now and everything.

And apparently you don't need a VISA or anything. You can just say you are coming on vacation and then just never take the return trip. As long as you don't get a DUI or anything even Bill O'Reilly won't be on your case.

In the other thread they were all inconsiderate buggers who went round shooting people?

Anyway, your Liberals are obviously not the same as our Liberals.

i said that's what i'd expect, not what they do. that's also a major part of the reason that sane people call them hypocrites.

We don't really do the "conservative" vs "liberal" thing over here, but then again we're much less polarized politically.

that may be true, but I also see that most people just sort of fall in line with what parliament mandates anyway. Or am I wrong on that?

It's true that the days of the large scale protest are long gone (apart from the Iraq anti-war marches). Political parties are all but redundant and can't fund themselves from their own pitiful membership, the unions have been smashed, political awareness is (from my experience anyway) virtually nil amongst the general public.

Consequently there are precious few people who are capable of getting crowds out onto the streets for any real protest. If the popular press get behind a cause there's a chance the government will change their mind and drop a contentious proposal but it's far from guaranteed.

Unless there's a drastic change in the voting system, preventing a state of virtual elected dictatorship for a minimum 4 year term, then i can't see anything changing. Needless to say neither party is willing to change a system where they hold all the power.
