Correct. The music was a distraction. You removed the distraction and chose to fully experience what was around you. The distraction helps the physical. Many employ music when doing intense training.
Mental training is very different. When you master the latter, you excel at the former.
It's best to jog on dirt or grass to save knees and hip joints over the decades. When I was a kid, I messed up my right ankle pretty bad catching in the spokes of the rear wheel of a bicycle I was catching a ride upon. About once every six months I'd catch a dip in the ground and my ankle would turn. Most people snap or severely sprain their ankle by fighting to stay upright in such a situation, but I learned to fall into it. Sometimes that was enough to allow me to continue jogging, other times just a minor sprain and I'd limp back to the hotel.
Once I left the MP3 player behind, it never happened again. Ever, for about 15 years IIRC. It was simply a matter of paying complete attention to what I was doing while maintaining an awareness of the surrounding area. A lot of joggers have been killed or injured by cars or bicycles they never heard coming behind them, mainly due to headphones blasting music.
