Tiger Woods in car crash

Hello T. A. Gardner,

This is the result of that unsafe, safety device the air bag. It isn't uncommon in very serious accidents that the occupants are "saved" (eg., alive) but so seriously injured that they become paraplegics from leg injuries as well as having other serious issues.

If airbags work so well, why don't they put them in race cars?

6 point harness?

Airbags to kill people they always have....Seatbelts do kill people they always have....but the experts say that they save many more lives than they take.

Do you dispute this?

Yes. I was around when they did the initial testing on airbags back in the early 70's. Car and Driver, et al., published lots of articles back then on this. They were found to rarely save lives over use of seatbelts except in the most extreme crashes at high speeds. On the down side, persons involved in such crashes often survived in terrible condition suffering major disabilities, continual issues from injuries, and the like. In lesser crashes where they went off they often caused additional injuries that wouldn't occur with just seat belts that worked as well.
It was also found that they raised the cost of a vehicle significantly, and the cost of insurance went up rather than down too.
Basically, the "science," to use today's favored term, argued that they shouldn't be adopted.

But Joan Claybrook of the Carter administration ignored all that and forced them into cars anyway. She had no particular background to make this decision off of and ignored the findings of the large studies done at the time. Her position was essentially "If it saves one life..." That ignored the likelihood that it would destroy many lives, even as the person survived, it would be economically disadvantageous, and basically the "science" said not to use them.

As I pointed out: If they work so well, why aren't they used in race cars? The answer is obvious. Seat belts and a serious roll cage structure work. Airbags don't. As a note, Volvo is big on these, putting more into the vehicle's structure and seat belts. It's what makes their cars safer than many other brands. The worst is likely the Smart car. You will have a nice looking corpse in one of those in a serious crash.

What a steaming pile of bullshit!

I've seen a woman I knew, turning into where I was at..she got t-boned at low speed, not a big deal, until she turned and was about to say something to me, and POW! That airbag hit her right in the face.
Next thing I know EMTs are wheeling her off unconscious on a gurney.
Sum Ting Wong.
It was some kind of red Chrysler convertible. Almost can remember the model..nrn though.
I'll never forget that day..it was all over..and she was OK, about to say something to me..and POW! That fucking airbag hit her right in the face.
What kinda Chrysler convertibles were there in the 90s? Not a LeBaron..if I hear it I'll know.

Yep. I remember a piece done by a local news TV station some years ago where one of their reporters went to an airbag factory in Mesa AZ to do a report. The factory was exploding fairly regularly and had killed and injured a number of workers as a result.
They let him experience an air bag going off. He was sitting in the passenger seat in the proper position of the test vehicle (no door on it so you could see better). They made him wear safety glasses (who the fuck wears safety glasses when driving?). They then set off the air bag on him.

He was knocked unconscious for almost twelve minutes. His "safety" glasses were smashed and broken. He suffered flash burns on his face and arms. Paramedics on hand took him to a hospital for further checks.

This was in a stationary vehicle with everything done to the optimal conditions for airbag deployment by a manufacturer of airbags at their airbag test facility. Yea, they're safe... My ass!

It was called something else back then...

It was all over when the airbag hit this woman in the face and hurt her.
I have never forgotten that. She was just about to say something to me. POW! It knocked her out!

Woods was really lucky there was no oncoming traffic. It appears after he lost control of his vehicle, it traveled across the oncoming lanes before coming to rest on the opposite side of the road. It is also very fortunate there were no joggers, bicycle riders or children along the road there.

Did somebody sabotage his brakes?
Why the rolling?
I have seen..oh damn! What do you call them?

Ok..A Pontiac TranSport ..somebody turned off too fast right in front of them,..and they barrel-rolled 7x and ended up on the side.
But the grandpa and grandson climbed out of the driver-side window OK.

True story.
It all happened right in front of me, and I still had to take a piss.

Wil he be able to golf again?

I think he should take this as a sign and retire. He will always have far more money than he will ever need. Seems to enjoy being with his wife and kids, retire and spend the rest of your life basking in who you are and get closer to community. I don’t pay much attention to him, but occasionally I read snipers about him.

Being an athlete requires discipline and sacrifice. He’s already accomplished everything in golf he could have ever dreamed of, incredible money, and has a place among the select few athletes on a first name basis with the entire world.

Michael, Kobe, LeBron and others among that few.

Hmm...I might look for the fuse and pull it after reading this.

Larry Bird lol.

If Tiger doesn’t at least attempt a comeback I’ll be very surprised. I’ll be even more surprised if he pulls it off. A femur or tibia fracture shouldn’t end his career but a crushed ankle might.

You have to remember, since he was a kid his goal was to beat Nicklaus' record of 18 majors. And he's not done that yet. Like you said he could retire today and his legacy is secure. But people like him have that extra drive. Now it remains to be seen if his body can recover from all this. But if it does I have to imagine he will continue to push forward in his quest.

That ankle is jacked after this.

Crushing injury on a joint is pretty much the end of the joint. The options would be a total ankle replacement [like a knee or hip] or ankle fusion where the joint is fused and the foot can no longer flex. The latter would end his career but he has a chance with the former.

It’s speculation but the ankle may be why they shipped him to UCLA: might have an ankle specialist there. As mentioned, any trauma center can fix long bone fractures—it’s routine for them. I actually miss doing some of that crap but not the grind lol.

Air bags save lives, such as Tiger Woods

Hello blackascoal,

I think he should take this as a sign and retire. He will always have far more money than he will ever need. My appreciation of him has become greatly diminished. He is good buddies with Donald Trump, and he thinks the laws of physics don't apply to him. Apparently he feels 'special' so he can risk public safety by exceeding the speed limit. He is so lucky he didn't kill someone after he lost control of that vehicle. How fast does one have to be going to lose contact with the road surface and roll over repeatedly and end up crossing 2 oncoming lanes (fortunately nobody was coming the other way) and end up off the opposite side of the road? Authorities say excessive speed is suspected in this crash. Ya think? Look at how far back down the road the investigation was being conducted. He has a history of speeding and DUI.

"Woods was raised as a Buddhist, and he actively practiced his faith from childhood until well into his adult, professional golf career.[232] In a 2000 article, Woods was quoted as saying that he "believes in Buddhism... not every aspect, but most of it."[233] He has attributed his deviations and infidelity to his losing track of Buddhism. He said, "Buddhism teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint. Obviously I lost track of what I was taught."[234]"

"In November 2009, the National Enquirer published a story claiming that Woods had had an extramarital affair with New York City nightclub manager Rachel Uchitel, who denied the claim.[213] Two days later, around 2:30 a.m. on November 27, Woods was driving from his Florida mansion in his Cadillac Escalade SUV when he collided with a fire hydrant, a tree, and several hedges near his home.[214] He was treated for minor facial lacerations and received a ticket for careless driving.[214][215] Following intense media speculation about the cause of the accident, Woods released a statement on his website and took sole responsibility for the accident, calling it a "private matter" and crediting his wife for helping him from the car.[216] "

"2017 arrest

On May 29, 2017, Woods was arrested near his Jupiter Island, Florida, home by the Jupiter Police Department at about 3:00 am. EDT for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was asleep in his car, which was stationary in a traffic lane with its engine running. He later stated that he had taken prescription drugs and did not realize how they might interact together.[227] On July 3, 2017, Woods tweeted that he had completed an out-of-state intensive program to tackle an unspecified issue.[228] At his August 9, 2017 arraignment, Woods had his attorney Douglas Duncan submit a not guilty plea for him and agreed to take part in a first-time DUI offender program and attend another arraignment on October 25.[229][230]

At a hearing on October 27, 2017, Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He received a year of probation, was fined $250, and ordered to undergo 50 hours of community service along with regular drug tests. He was not allowed to drink alcohol during the probation, and if he violated the probation he would be sentenced to 90 days in jail with an additional $500 fine.[231] " Tiger Woods - wiki

I don't know if you're a big golf guy but do you remember Ben Hogan? He had that serious car accident that f'd up his legs and somehow he was able to eventually return (he was younger than Tiger when it happened to him). I could look this up obviously but would be curious his injuries compared to Tiger's.

Hello Darth,

Might have screwed him up.

Apparently, he has no head or internal injuries so the seat belts worked. Thinking seriously about disabling my airbag after this.

There have been recalls on air bags and their inflators. Instances where air bags have prematurely deployed may have been due to a recall having not been performed. Overall, air bags save far more lives than the number of instances when a faulty air bag has contributed to a death. The odds are against you if you disable.

On the other hand, if you ignore the advice to keep your hand low on the wheel, and happen to have your hand on top of the wheel at the instant one goes off, your arm could be broken as is smashes into your face. So if you refuse to heed the warnings and act accordingly, it may be better to take your chances without one.
