Learn this lesson, Liberals.

Liberal spending does have its consequences, usually severe.

Faced with a ballooning deficit and a clear signal that voters won't pay more to fix it, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger released a budget plan Tuesday that would eliminate welfare, drop 1 million poor children from health insurance, cut off new grants for college students and shut down 80 percent of state parks.

# The budget proposal would eliminate vast swaths of programs, including CalWORKs — the welfare program serving more than 521,000 families who now receive $526 average monthly grants — and Healthy Families, which subsidizes health care for low-income children whose families don't qualify for Medi-Cal. Those cuts would also cost the state billions in federal matching funds.

# Medi-Cal coverage for dialysis and for breast and cervical cancer treatment for those over age 65 would be cut. Undocumented immigrants would lose nonemergency health care.

# In the prisons, rehabilitation, education and vocational programs would be hacked. So would the sentences of nonviolent, non-serious offenders, who would go free a year early.

# More than 200,000 college-bound students would lose some or all of their tuition assistance under the Cal Grant program. New grants for students to attend college would be eliminated, and existing grants would be reduced. All of that would come on top of $335 million in cuts for the University of California and California State University systems — which already have seen $415 million in cuts this year, forcing student fee increases.

# Surprisingly spared the ax — so far, anyway — were the state's battered K-12 schools. Though they represent California's single biggest budget
expense, the governor proposed no new cuts Tuesday.

This is where Liberal spending gets you and when the people refuse to let you take any more of their money.

Far be it for me to stick up for anyone in California's state legislature because they don't deserve it but voters here also bear blame as we (Californians) continulely pass spending iniatives mandating all kinds of different spending. It is a big cluserf*ck with a lot of blame to go around. However outrageous new spending programs during boom times which legislatures know can't be sustained during down times contribute mightely.

This is more evidence of the failure of their initiative system then the failure of progressive policies like healthcare for millions of poor children.

Another failure of california initiative system: black people and other christians discriminating against the gay community.

I can buy in to some of that, but what should be also highly noted is where the cuts are coming from. Does anyone see cuts coming from any legislative salaries? benefits? pet projects? No, all of their special stuff sure is safe, isn't it?

That's because cutting legislative salaries would amount to peanuts and the time they would spend getting those peanuts passed wouldn't be worth nearly as much as cutting the bigger expenditures straight off. Cutting their salaries would be more of a political device than an actual useful budgetary exercise. It should still probably be done, though I have no idea what legislators make in CA.

As far as pet projects go, I can guarantee they've already gotten axed by and large by the lack of funds from the state. You can't eliminate a program twice, so that's also a useless thing to do. A lot of the pet projects are being paid for by the federal government right now, which help the state make some unskilled labor jobs.

My biggest problem with CA is their stupid initiative system, which is similar to the one we have in Wash. The difference is in Washington people actually vote to pass levies to raise the money to do what they want and clowns like Tim Iman usually get defeated by more sensible people. Californians are airheads who want the legislature to provide all these benefits and then turn around and pass initiatives that prevent the legislature from getting the money they need to carry out those programs.

You realize that the initiative process came out of the Progressive Era, right?

I too am not a fan of it, as it smacks of direct democracy, but then again in WA it is often a useful evil to fight back against Olympia.

Yeah, so you can do retarded shit like enact $30 car tabs then the next year have to take money out of the education fund to cover the shortfall of money for road maintenance.

FIGHT AGAINST DA MAN!

I think the experience in California and other places has shown how unstable and bad a form of government the initiative system can be. The simple fact is that we, as citizens, don't usually have enough time on our hands to fruitfully debate all the issues on the hand all the time. Most of the people out there don't have a full idea of what the consequences of their vote are; like when they mandate massive spending increases, demand taxes be cut, and pass balanced budget amendments all at the same time.

And then they go and blame the legislature at the end for taking a huge hacksaw at everything left and never look at themselves; they should realized that they're part of the process too, and partly responsible. IMHO, that's why we have representatives. If you don't like the issues they represent, vote for someone else. Unfortunately, they aren't the philosopher kings our founders had envisioned, but there's really no ideal solution. The initiative system is too chaotic. And subjecting the constitution to simple majority vote is foolishness.

Right wing solutions are f*cking GREAT.......................if only PEOPLE would evaporate

"The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities. But in all that people can individually do as well for themselves, Government ought not to interfere."
President Abraham Lincoln

I absolutely agree.

African-Americans are a homophobic people .. because we are slaves to religion.

only if you exclude the declining job market.

It's called a recession, SMY. And in case you haven't noticed, California is the only state that has grown nearly every year of its existence. Due to liberalism. People flee from Texas to live in California, because Texas's conservative laws makes the place unlivable. I would rather live in Afghanistan that withstand the quality of life that conservatism has oppressed the people of Texas with.

People flee from Texas to live in California for all the free social entitlements and because Texas's conservative laws makes people be self sufficient. I would rather live in Afghanistan that withstand the hardships of actually having to work for a living, like Texas does.

why do you hate america?
