as I said, I don't agree with pumping the kid full of lead. However many of us have never been in that situation before. I cannot imagine with the adrenaline, the fight or flight kicking in your brain, the fear, the nerves, how rattled one is, you just loose cognition. chances are you don't act rationally. Temporary insanity if you will. This man did not bring this situation upon himself. I don't feel he is a future threat to society, and I don't think he deserves to be in jail.
 
Grind is the only one I see talking about the entire situation. This guy was not some loose cannon waiting for the chance to shoot someone. He was a guy who was attacked by armed thugs who would have killed him in a NY minute. I am not justifying his shooting the man when he was down but since I have not been in the situation I can't condemn him either.

LOL You must be yanking mine. The purpose of having a gun for personal defense is to stop the attacker, not to kill him, but if he dies the so be it. In this case the attacker was stopped, at least long enough for the defender to chase after the other attackers. If he had shot at the others running away from him he'd have committed another crime.

While I agree that this guy's actions are not defensible if the teenager was indeed unconscious, I wonder... what is it about this situation that makes the clerk a 'gun nut'?

Another factor to keep in mind, flashing a gun at someone who has been in war, probably not a positive on their psyche. This does not justify his actions, but should be considered.

Not quite. What you essentially have done is given someone else the right to use extreme force, potentially deadly, to stop you. Do you understand the difference or do I have to explain in greater detail?

I read a better article that said the video revealed not only was the kid still moving around, but the other perp was still shooting at the shop owner.

I agree that if the attacker was stopped he should not have shot him again unless there was reason to feel threatened by him.

But I disagree with your statement that the gun is to stop the attacker not to kill him. Its called Deadly Force for a good reason. You aim for center of body mass and keep shooting until he falls or you run out of ammo. You do not try to wound the attacker.

You aim for the center of the torso because that's a big target and can't move out of the way as fast as a head, limb or ass. And as I said before, if the attacker dies then so be it.

Interesting that the ultimate target for a trained sniper is to shoot the guy's balls off.
