White House: Sotomayor says she chose word poorly

you know whats damn sad, is that I'm pretty much in agreement with this. For all of their bullshit rhetoric about 'originalism', there is only one in the bunch and believe it or not, it's Thomas. Scalia is a bullshit artist of the 9th degree after his Raich decision, Roberts is a tool for a republican president, Alito is alot more mainstream strict construction except for the fact that he seems to be led on a leash by Roberts.....

all in all, the court system sucks ass and should be terminated and replaced with real patriots.

Who decides the definition of a "real patriot"?

As far as we know, a WWM candidate never said that, but it was certainly implied by the fact that almost 200 years passed before anybody except a WWM was appointed to the SC.
But you know if a WWM did say that nowadays we wouldn't be talking about a nomination, we'd be talking about who else would be nominated.

that's idiotic. what's so hard to face? the lady said she thinks her decisions would be wiser because she's a latina woman. No other way to interpret the remarks

I just read where Newt is backtracking now and saying he should not have called the supreme nominee a rascist.
:D

Yep, and not just newtie, either. Now that they're actually examining her record rather than responding knee-jerk, they see she's way more moderate than they've tried to paint her via an out-of-context soundbite.

Yet when Alito said virtually the same thing, it slipped under the radar.

"And that's why I went into that in my opening statement. Because when a case comes before me involving, let's say, someone who is an immigrant -- and we get an awful lot of immigration cases and naturalization cases -- I can't help but think of my own ancestors, because it wasn't that long ago when they were in that position...

When I get a case about discrimination, I have to think about people in my own family who suffered discrimination because of their ethnic background or because of religion or because of gender. And I do take that into account."

Didn't happen with Alito.
Alito did not say that he would make decisions better, he said he would take that into account. If you don't see the difference it is because you are deliberately obtuse.

If I say, "I take my experience into account when forming my opinion." it is not the same as saying, "I make better decisions than you because I'm not white."

I do make better decisions than you... but it isn't because I'm not white. ;) <- Hint for lefties, this winky here is to note that I am joking on this particular line of this post.

Nor was Sotomayor's statement as conclusive as you've stated. The statement that she's only "hoping" better conclusions would be reached "more often than not" is certainly not the same as saying "I do make better decisions than you because I'm not white." I'm pretty sure you understand the difference and just wanted to get in a dig. :p

I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life”

Again, when taking colloquialisms into account, the reality is she was saying that because they were latina and woman they would make better decisions. The two statements are not equal and you tried to fit the square peg into that round hole anyway.

If I were the nominee, was white, and I said, "I would hope that better decisions would be made because a wise white man was making them and therefore had a better perspective on things," we'd not be talking about my confirmation hearings, we'd be talking about who else would be nominated. That is the reality. And because I was conservative and said it, I'd be likened to Hitler and called racist (rightly) for it.

i would hope that black people, more often than not, cannot reach a better conclusion than white people :pke:

WASHINGTON – In a bit damage control, the White House on Friday said Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor acknowledges she chose her words poorly by saying in 2001 that a female Hispanic judge would often reach a "better" conclusion than a white male judge. "I think if she had the speech to do all over again, I think she'd change that word," presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

lmao....whats wrong...why is it poor if "nothing" is wrong SF, BAC, et al...

why the "damage" control...this is rich, i shall enjoy my extra rich pudding now! :clink:

because that is what politicians do when there is a 'perceived' slight. They err on the side of being overly PC.

If I were her, I would have flipped the bird to anyone dumb enough to be bitching over something so trivial. Especially when it was obvious to all except the most retarded what she meant.

I really tried to find something outrageous about that, but couldn't see anything. Perhaps you can explain your problem.

If, perhaps, he had said "I would think a wise hispanic judge would reach a better decision than a white judge" or anything even close to that, you might have had a point, but you failed.

superfreak is just p'od becuase obama basically apologized after superfreak vigoriously defended her words....

As I said, it is what politicians do. If someone starts bitching, they start apologizing.... regardless of the legitimacy of the bitching.

I could care less if Obama apologized or not.
