Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Officer Steven Ballmer said the world’s largest software company would move some employees offshore if Congress enacts President Barack Obama’s plans to impose higher taxes on U.S. companies’ foreign profits.

“It makes U.S. jobs more expensive,” Ballmer said in an interview. “We’re better off taking lots of people and moving them out of the U.S. as opposed to keeping them inside the U.S.”

Obama on May 4 proposed outlawing or restricting about $190 billion in tax breaks for offshore companies over the next decade. Such business groups as the National Foreign Trade Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable have denounced the proposed overhaul.

LOL

This from the guy that donated 100,000 for Obama's inauguration. Guess the honeymoon's over.

Expect to see more of it.

LOL This is hillarious. Republicans are having trouble getting elected as dog catchers and ya'll are predicting the demise of Democrats? Oh the irony here is rich! LOL

Oh, come on! Where did you get "demise of the Democratic party" out of that?

The fact is, Obama is pissing off more and more of those who supported him. Does it mean the demise of the democratic party? Of course not. Does it mean the potential for a much more interesting mid-term election? You bet.

I think this is very different from the companies that ship the jobs overseas.

They (from what I understand) plan to move the employees overseas. So an american still has the job the government just doesn't get as much money.

Time for the Fair Tax?

dude, you should know as well as anyone that people are definitely going to vote how their pocketbook is affected, and THIS is going to affect it.

Democrats will never vote for the Fair Tax because it removes so much of their power and control over every aspect of our lives through targeted taxation.

Microsoft has already moved many people to Ireland where business and income taxes are lower.

Bullshit. The only one Obama is pissing off is the extremist at either end and from where I sit, which is one hell of a lot closer to the center than you are, that's a damned good thing!

More bullshit. Democrats will never vote for some stupid VAT or Flat tax because of it's inherint unfairness. The only fair form of taxation is progressive taxation.

That's just right wing hyperbole. I'm sure MS would love to import Indian IT personell at $5/hr or send service jobs over there. Closing tax loopholes that prevent them from sending jobs over seas and avoiding their civic responsibility to pay their taxes is just plain fair. They want to move their companies to India? Hell I'll call that bluff in a heart beat. Let them try to do business in India with their infrastructure. What Obama has done here, and need I point out that he campaigned on this, is taking away incentives from companies to move jobs over seas to avoid paying taxes.

That's your own stupid opinion and nothing more, and considerably more informed people have different ones.

So stating it like it's an established fact only makes you look more foolish.

Mott, what do you think is going to happen when every single avenue of cutting costs is taken away from MS? They will move their entire operation to another country, period, and don't think that neary all countries out there would LOVE a chance to house MS with every tax break they could give them. Then what would happen?

How many of the employees will move overseas?
And how many of them are already Visa workers from India?

Not enough facts to make a clear decision.

I would vote for a flat rate personal income tax. With ZERO deductions. SS income and such would be i exempt of course.
I think we could get by with 15%.

Heard any of the rumbles from the initial report that Obama is considering taxing health benefits? If he actually follows through on something that stupid it would practically guarantee a one term presidency. The price of a company-provided health plan is not cheap - around $800/mo average. 15% of that in owed taxes ain't peanuts. It would add over $1000 to the average tax burden.

There is also a significant number of people whose support for Obama was significantly based on the issues of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo. If you think they are satisfied with Obama's answers there?

Obama was quoted HOW MANY TIMES with the promise: "If you make less than $200,000 your taxes will not go up." Since he achieved office he has made several proposals which will, if enacted, result in higher taxes for people making less than $200,000. It will be interesting to watch reaction when people see their taxes go back to 1998-2000 rates if/when the democrats allow the Bush tax cuts to expire.

It will also be interesting to see reactions when people who are used to seeing a tax return find themselves owing money because less is being deducted with no corresponding reduction in rates.

Also, the die hard free marketers are not the only ones voicing concern over the way GM, the banks, and other situations are being handled.

In short, your head is in the sand (or up your ass) if you think the only ones Obama is pissing off are the extremes.

I've always wondered, Good Luck, how it is fair for the minimum wage worker from Wal-Mart to effectively be paying some of the taxes on your wage, simply because you receive some of your wages in the form of health benefits, rather than straight cash? How is that even a rational system or a rational tax break? What more tax breaks for upper middle income earners can we expect? Well I say, minimum wage earners shouldn't have to pay higher taxes to pick up for your slack.

do you then believe a class of wage earners should have to pay higher taxes to pick up for a class of slackers? what is the point of your last sentence?

Why even reply to such a depth of complete and total ignorance? He is obviously totally unaware that Walmart provides these same tax-exempt benefits for their employees. WM also ignores the fact that minimum wage earners do not make enough to pay taxes in the first place. In fact, he is unaware of damned near everything having to do with reality.

But that is not the point, anyway. Whether one believes that people who earn more are somehow responsible for paying the way for those who earn less or not is immaterial to the topic of this thread. The POINT is Obama and all his blind, brain dead followers made this big, huge, repeat it every day until you wanted to puke pledge that people who make less than $200,000 (no, wait, it's $150K or was that $100K?) would not see ANY rise in ANY of their taxes. The REALITY is they plan to let the Bush tax cuts lapse in 2010, which will increase everyone's taxes; they are talking about taxing benefits that were previously not taxed; raising federal taxes on a number of consumer items; installing a carbon footprint tax, raising fees, increasing this, raising that. And the people who haven't gotten their obligatory liberal lobotomy are starting to take notice.

Further more, the people who ARE taking notice are not the blind followers, but rather the non-affiliated voters who were the biggest factor in both Obama's victory and the democratic majority in congress. Pissing off the people don't care which letter follows your name on the ballot is not a wise thing to do, because they'll turn right around and vote the other way when they think they've been betrayed. And raising taxes in umpteen different ways after pledging not to is a big betrayal factor. It cost Bush Sr. his 2nd term, (Remember: "Read my lips: No New Taxes!!"?) The same types of actions (ie: broken promises and higher taxes) have a good chance of costing Obama a 2nd term.
