Nasty...

yeah, I used to watch alot of those with my grandmother. Not once did I ever hear those great comedians crack sexually based jokes about underage daughters, always about the person being roasted directly. If Letterman had just made jokes about Sarah Palin, well that's adult humor and people should get over it. By attacking the underage daughter, it made Letterman look like a bigger ass than Limbaugh.

Why is the assumption that he was talking about her underage daughter and not the one that is not a minor and did get knocked up?

Show me where he mentioned her underage daughter and I'll be right there next to you denouncing it. From what I can find, he didn't mention anyone by name, and maybe I am wrong but I just assumed he was referring to Bristol, who is fair game, for being an irresponsible teen mother.

That assumption most likely comes from the fact that Bristol was a minor when she did get pregnant. It's also very poor taste to make attacks on the children of these people in government positions. I've always condemned negative remarks made towards the children of these politicians whether they were made towards the Bush daughters, Chelsea Clinton, and even the little carter girl. They didn't ask to be put in these positions, just had to go along, and they don't deserve idiots like Limbaugh or Letterman making such nasty comments about them.

Even then, because she made idiot mistakes at 17 doesn't deserve having idiots like Letterman make nasty comments about her on national television. You just don't do that to the children of politicians, democrat or republican.

So the assumption is that Alex Rodriquez time-travelled and knocked up Palin's daughter at the Yankee game while Palin was in NY? That doesn't make much sense, nor does it comport with the "14 year-old" stuff.

I agree with you on the children jokes, but why turn the outrage meter up to 11 and start with some silly shit about 14 year-olds instead of just saying that bringing the family into it is tasteless?

I never mentioned '14 year old' stuff. I simply stated that Letterman debased himself with his comments. Involving the kids alone is what set my outrage meter to 11.

Comedy comes in many varieties. Ever hear of Don Rickles?? Rickles has made a career out of that type of joke.

Also, I've read blogs and watched a replay of the bit itself, and NOWHERE does Letterman mention rape or for that matter which daughter he's referring to. Palin's already got one daughter who's a mattress-back, so I assumed Letterman was talking about Bristol.

Bottom line...Don't find him funny? Don't watch. I think Letterman is hilarious and I think I will keep watching.
That's not comedy its just plain disgusting. Rickles never called women sluts and discussed raping young girls. Letterman is sick, and I, along with many other Americans, will be turning the channel when Letterman comes on.

Like I said, show me the quote where Letterman mentioned raping young girls and I will denounce it with you.

You'll just ride his excuse (that took this so-called great comedian two days to think up) that when he said "her daughter getting knocked up by a ball player during the 7th inning stretch" he wasn't talking about Palin's daughter that was in Yankee Stadium but another older one that was not.

Even if that were true, which it obviously is not, regardless, both comments are sickening and degrade women everywhere. But apparently that's OK because hes a fucking liberal and so are you. *shrug*

NOW's response. http://www.now.org/issues/media/hall-of-shame/
After two nights of "jokes" at the expense of Palin and her family, Letterman tried to explain himself and offer something of an apology. On his June 10 show, Letterman said he was referring to Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol -- not the 14-year-old daughter who actually accompanied Palin on her New York trip. Letterman said "I recognize that these are ugly" jokes. NOW agrees. Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days -- it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin's "slutty flight attendant look" -- yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician's appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman's stature, who appears on what used to be known as "the Tiffany Network" (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.

On that point, it's important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the "White House dog." NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren't professed conservatives.

Ignoring the "slut" joke, equating the rape joke with one about someone's appearance (likely out of context), then taking a slap at conservatives in general. Pitiful. *shrug*

This is why I didn't listen to Limbaugh for 10 years.
