Don’t misunderstand me. I hold no illusions about how northern republicans(including Lincoln himself)felt about blacks, but they were the only ones taking a pragmatic approach to slavery, and to grant blacks a semblance of equality. I guess you could call those old pachyderms some real “progressive” folks for their time!
