US says hot dog diplomacy still on with Iran


WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States said Monday its invitations were still standing for Iranian diplomats to attend July 4 celebrations at US embassies despite the crackdown on opposition supporters.

President Barack Obama's administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution.

"There's no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.

"We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran," Kelly said. "We tried many years of isolation, and we're pursuing a different path now."

But he said it was not clear if Iranian diplomats had accepted the invitations.

The State Department has said that the invitations are largely a symbolic gesture of goodwill and that the July 4 barbecues were not intended to take up substantive policy matters.

Obama has walked a tightrope since the violence broke out in Iran, urging the Islamic regime to end its repression of protests but insisting he will not let Tehran's leaders cast the United States as a bogeyman.

Why should we even give a rats as what someone as incompetent and consistently wrong about foreign policy as you've been Dweebway? It's not like you've been wrong some of the time. You've been wrong each and every time! Not to mention your hypocracy. Are you trying to tell me that the Bushies never, ever supported any repressive regimes? You just simply don't know what you're talking a bout...again. The two biggest foreign policy disasters in the last 50 years have been Vietnam and Iraq. Some knee jerk comment about Carter shows me you're just a partisan hack who will repeat anything some wingnut tells you cause you want to believe it. Can't you do some real research? An honest opinion based and supported by fact?

I do think Carter was the worst President of the United States, I lived through it...so that is my proof, and all I need...

Just a guess .. but if you lived through Carter I'm guessing that you lived through Bush.

I've shared a lot of those moons that you've lived through and none of those moons were ever as dark as they were during the Bush years.

Iraq was the single worst military and strategic blunder in American history.

Can you argue that it wasn't?
