Tea Party Group Banned from Nation's Oldest Parade

They'll probably be declared a terrorist group next. But of course, there's no conspiracy to reduce america to an authoritarian state. That's just anti-masonic hokum.
It's inane to suggest that Freemasons would want to get rid of the constitution. They were largely responsible for its creation.

James Tavares, the chairman of the float committee, said he called Tea Party teasurer Marina Peterson to tell her that the group violated the safety rules by having hand-outs on the parade route.

Peterson said the flyers were copies of the U.S. Constitution, distributed by people who were not part of the Tea Party unit.

If that's the case, those people were indistinguishable from the float contingent, since both groups were wearing the same yellow t-shirts, said Tavares.

Which is it? Were the people who handed out the flyers part of the "tea party" group or not?

AND .. if the "tea party" group knew handing out flyers was against the rules, why didn't they stop those who handed them out knowing they were indistinguishable from the group?

You can't make the argument that "we were just passing out copies of the Constitution on Independence Day" .. then turn around and claim it was someone else.

Excellent point....also, one has to ask has it been "tradition" for political parties to have a float or representation in these parades (outside of the local elected politicos doing the traditional march).

Was the constitution the only thing on those handed out items?
I would like to see exactly what was passed out before I would pass judgement on it.
I suspect their website url or something was handed out as well.

Passing out U.S. Constitutions on July 4th gets group tossed from annual celebration.
The Rhode Island Tea Party group says that it has banned from future Bristol 4th of July Parades. Last Saturday's parade, which is the oldest in the country at 224 years, had included a float representing the taxpayer group, which has recently been organizing "Tea Party" type political rallys.

Tea Party spokesperson Marina Peterson says she was contacted by a parade committe member on Wednesday and was told "It is because some members of the RI Tea Party passed out U.S. Constitutions to the crowd. Apparently passing out the US Constitution on Independence Day is an egregious violation of parade rules. This is despite the fact that other floats passed out solicitations for their businesses, which is against the Parade guidelines, and these businesses have NOT been told that they are banned from participating in the future."

Calls to parade committee member Jim Tavares were not immediately returned.

I can almost guarantee you that the teabaggers weren’t just simply handing out “constitutions”. I have little doubt that there was partisan political crap written on those handouts. I imagine the parade rules require non-partisan and non-political behaviour, but who knows. Neither you or I know what the rules of the parade were.

Now, you appear to need a lesson in the Constitution.

The first amendment protects you from the government interfering with your right to free speech.

The first amendment does not protect you from private organizations interfering with your free speech rights when it occurs on their property, or in the context of one of their functions. Judging from their website, this parade is organized, run, and put on by a private volunteer organization comprised of private citizens. Its not a formal government function.

A private parade can do anything they want to restrict your ability to pass out fliers, or engage in partisan politics. Its their parade.

You really don't understand the constitution do you?

The teabaggers can form their own parade if they want to pass out flyers warning of the evils of socialism. No one is stopping them from applying for a parade permit

Riiiight. You just posted this article in a simple quest to provide benign news and information.

you aren't fooling anyone. You posted it in a fit of phony fuax outrage, and assumed that teabaggers have a right to do whatever they want at someone else's privately-organized parade.

Dishonesty is not an admirable trait. You should really strive to be honest as much as possible

You can't guarentee anything! It sounds as though those in charge of the parade are partisan assholes, but I can't guarentee it. I can however guarentee that they have one.

Handing out our Constitution certainly seems appropriate for a 4th of July parade....except to liberal wack jobs that is.

This is funny as hell, Y'all saying it is ok to kick a group out for handing fliers out, but yet the Saint Patrick days parade in NY almost didn't happen a few years back cause they wouldn't allow Homo's in it

Well to make a long story short, they eventually got in and made complete asses of themselves, I see it is against the rules to hand out fliers on the parade route, dangerous some say, well is marching dressed as a condom, walking down the road or should I say skipping down the road with nothing but chaps on,ass hanging out, isn't that a little worse than fliers?

Lets not forget the Latino parade in NY, can't remember the real name, but there were rape's muggins you name it , it was there, So maybe we need to stand on 1 side of the fence instead of jumping back and fourth when it suites us

You're comparing apples and oranges....the St. Patrick's Day Parade point of contention was that gay folk of Irish decent were given a "don't ask, don't tell" choice by the parade's organizers. Being that various sub-groups were allowed to fly banners of recognition, the gay folk raised hell...and given the traditional political exploitation of the parade, the organizers capitulated. The "teabaggers" were (to my knowledge) using a local parade to push their political agenda. If there has been no tradition of such from any other group in that parades history, the "teabaggers" were rightly punished for their actions. Also, the antics you describe were more akin to the Halloween or Gay Pride parade in NYC and NOT the gay representation in the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Lets not forget the Latino parade in NY, can't remember the real name, but there were rape's muggins you name it , it was there, So maybe we need to stand on 1 side of the fence instead of jumping back and fourth when it suites us

Again, you compare apples to oranges. I believe you are referring to the ONE incident that occured during a Puerto Rican Day parade. One bad year out of DOZENS others.

Bottom line: Nothing you refer to justifies the teabaggers attempt to exploit a parade for it's political agenda. They got nailed for breaking the rules of a privately organized event. Deal with it.

It's hyphenated. Mercy! I stand corrected....do forgive my error!
And no, it is not how they refer to themselves.

What stands out....the pic of the woman holding the sign urging people to "tea bag the liberal dems before they tea bag you". Kind of makes her a "tea-bagger", wouldn't you say?

So they are not "tea-baggers".....what are they, tea-partyers? Tea Bag Party members? (since they're not an official political party, that isn't legit).

Well, whatever the "official" logo (which neither your article or the subsequent links give).... Hell, they're a bigger joke than the double-entendre of "tea-baggers". Somehow, life goes on!

Better the tea-bagger than the tea-baggee I always say.

But the reality is whoever thought this one up didn't know dink about common urban linguistic phrases...

Although I don't know why the Dems are so thrilled about getting tea-bagged... :dunno:

My "article" was from one of the uber-left sites, they are unlikely to give you anything like that. However they call themselves "Tea Party Protestors"...
