People have to pass tests and take examinations, and present their credentials to a government agency to get a driver's licence.
I don't think there is anything comparable for buying guns, therefore I do not see it as a good analogy. Can't people just walk into gun shows and stock up with weapons?

Voting tests or poll taxes have been ruled unconstitutional, as far as I am aware.
Pre-screening for mental stability to purchase guns has not been ruled on, to my knowledge.
