Also, there's the little fantasy that people will stay relatively healthy until middle or retirment age. Bottom line: shit happens.....and one look into emergency rooms across the country can attest to the fact that medical emergencies are not a rareity among the 20-50 age range. So it's back to square one...do we put something into the kitty to take care of people or do we go "business as usual".

And if he's such a pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps guy, why is he out begging complete strangers to pay for his medical bills? Why doesn't he just go into debt, and pay it off himself like millions of americans, and many of my friends have?

it is amazing the liberals misconception of conservatism....

conservatism is not about always being able to support yourself, have your own ins...etc...it is more about less government and allowing people to voluntarily help their neighbor vs. having teh government forcing you to help your neighbor. there is nothing about conservatism that is against helping those less fortunate or those without ins because they just lost their job.....

this thread showed the true ugly side of many liberals on this board. they turned an unfortunate situation about someone less fortunate into a joke all because that person leans republican and is against obama's plan. IMO, liberals are losing ground on the healthcare issue for (many reasons) one being their cavilier and callous attitude to those that do not agree with the bill. you act like this and you will not win people to your cause. i have no doubt that some liberal will now say that they don't care if they win republicans (some poster said this to me last week).....

Nobody's laughing that he was hurt, if, indeed, he really was hurt.

One of the posters here was slamming another who talked about not having health care while going to school full-time, holding down two jobs, and dealing with a medical condition. I'm sure if she decided to beg the public for handouts, conservatives would be all over her for that.
