bikes ? this will not significantly alter deaths. this is an attempt to eliminate cars.

i could be convinced about speeds but not this smoke and mirrors bs.
 
Maybe when I’m 80. I can remember my sophomore year of college being so happy that 20 miles of my 90 mile commute was on I-40 and the speed limit on interstates was raised to 65 that year. That 55 stuff is for the birds.

I have two bikes but i think all these bike lanes are stupid and dangerous. They really mess up traffic in the center of the city where i live. And hardly anyone uses them. You see a thousand cars on the roads for every bike.

The only way i can see americans giving up their cars is if gas goes to to $10. And it might.

Immediately after america went to the 55 mph speed limit in 1974, highway deaths went from 55k a year to 46k.!!! It was a great idea and you are a psychopath. If anything we should make the national speed limit 45.

Because the last time this was tried, it worked so well...? The national 55 mph speed limit became an international farce. It was reviled to the point that it became the butt of jokes in movies, music, and society. Nobody obeyed it.

In Arizona, there is still a statute on the books for speeding between 55 and 65 mph called "wasting a natural resource." It is a civil, non-moving violation with a $25 fine attached.

You really want to save lives from driver caused accidents? Make getting a license an actual act of learning to drive. In Germany and Japan, as two examples, you have to be 18 to get a license, and the process is far more involved. But the result is drivers that actually know how to drive rather than handing licenses to any idiot like the US does.

Aside from that, the argument that it would save thousands of lives a year, is the same idiotic one that puts "Safety first" even as it raises the cost of many industrial processes to a point where they are off shored rather than trying to make them 100% safe. It's the same idiocy as trying to eliminate all pollution. It is an Ipse dixit fallacy. The tradeoff is that a certain level of risk is accepted for driving in return for a greater economic and social good for the nation from that risk.

Carter's national 55 mph speed limit showed the nation wasn't willing to accept that low highway speed. Since vehicle safety and viability at high speeds has greatly improved since the 1980's, it should be apparent that regressing to that failure won't fly today any more than it did 40+ years ago.

The national 55 mph speed limit saved 9,000 lives every year. It was a huge success but the media was paid by the auto industry to say otherwise. Car crashes mean car sales.

WASHINGTON, Nov..26 (UPI)—President Carter has approved a proposal to set new Federal standards for enforcement of the 55‐mileinaninhour speed limit, White House spokesman said.

The proposal, which would require congressional approval, was made by Transportation Secretary Brock Adams ‐ a littleinnoticed report on diminishing compliance with speed limit laws enacted 1974 to conserve energy.

The White House spokesman said Mr. Carter had accepted Adams’ recommendaHon of standards that would require states, ‐ effect, to show proof that they are enforcing the 55‐m.p.h. limit. The plan would require states to monitor highway traffic and to certify ‐ yearly reports that a required percentage of drivers had obeyed the limit.

So, Nixon might have enacted it, but it wasn't enforced as a law until Carter put regulations in place to force states to adopt it.

It raised inflation too. Why? Because shipment of goods and services took longer. Saving lives is not the be-all, end-all purpose of a society.

I have slowed down now that I'm an old fart! I drive the speed limit now always!

But drivers who drive below the speed limit are just as much a problem, if not more so, than fast drivers.
