Sales of Nokia's (NOK) Symbian smartphones are drifting. Apple's (AAPL) iPhone is gaining on RIM's (RIMM) BlackBerry. Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows Mobile is still sinking. And the launch of the Palm (PALM) Pre barely made a ripple in the gobal smartphone market.

Those were the headlines from the smartphone portion of Gartner's 2009 Q2 mobile phone report, which saw smartphone sales grow 27% even as overall mobile phone sales, feeling recessionary pressure, fell 6%.

In this context, Apple was the clear winner. Its iPhone sales, as Gartner counts them, grew more than 500% year to year, and its market share, as we figure it, grew 375%. (See chart below the fold.)

"Apple's expansion into a larger number of countries in the past year has produced a clear effect on sales volumes, as have the recent price adjustments on the 8GB 3G iPhone," according to Gartner's press release. "Apple brought its much-anticipated new device — the iPhone 3G S — to market at the end of the second quarter of 2009, but its full potential will only start to show in the sales figures in the second half of 2009."

Gartner made note of the declining market shares of Symbian and Windows Mobile, but it expressed particular concern about the Palm Pre.

"This device attracted a lot of media attention but showed mixed results at the cash register as sales only reached 205,000 units," said Gartner principal analyst Roberta Cozza. "Palm currently ranks tenth in the smartphone market and Gartner remains concerned about its ability to gain traction outside the US market, where its brand is less strong."

Palm Pre….Pre to what? Failure?
It's also ugly looking….When will corporations realize that customers care about asthetics as much as functionality…

The iPhone beats them all in every aspect….Who cares about 5 mega pixel cameras and flash and blah blah….People probably don't half the features…..The point is that the iPhone does well what it was designed to do, and the people who have it know that (except the ones reluctant to change)

The guy who only has 1 friend using iPhone, he must be locked up in a slammer somewhere. Look around you, mcdonalds, airports, parks, etc. They're everywhere. I used to feel special when I had my first generation iPhone. But not anymore. It's no longer a gadget, it's an utility.

I may sell my 3G on ebay to get the 3G S.
I sold the original for what I paid for it.
LOL. Idiots. I'd go and get the 3G S. I've been thinking of getting the G2, but then I'd lose my upgrade and I need it for when the iPhones come to Verizon, my guess is beginning of next year.

I can't figure why people pay so much. The only good reason out there is they don't want to lock in with At&T for 2 years so they unlock the phone and put thier own sim card in.

you like Verizon?

My contract with AT&T just ended and I am looking for a new provider. Do you get good service from them up in the mountains?
They are the only company with good coverage out where I live, and yes I get coverage in the mountains with them too.

LOL. Excellent. I forwarded his "without creating any deficits" speech to it along with the CBO report detailing that they are full of it. I thought it sounded a bit fishy myself.

Lol... very similar to what I sent them.

The Coffman meeting was pretty good last night at the Chamber. Can't wait for Bennett next week

I've got to get the time off for that. Mike I know, he comes by our meetings often and is a good guy. He was quite direct, "I'll not be voting for it..."

I just got a Palm Pre...so far I likes it.....my Precious!.....

The Palm Pre is a nice device, it's just not as flashy as the Iphone. It's just like the MP3 player wars... once IPod got into the ring with it's beautiful aesthetics, no one could compete. It became a huge brand and people started referring to MP3 players as a whole as IPods instead of MP3 players. Even the new Zune, which is, admittedly, every bit as good as IPod, and good looking to boot, but it just can't compete because the IPod is such a great brand.

AT&T is the worst network in America. Definitely the dumbest move Apple made was going exclusive with them, because they are just so terrible. It's one of the only reasons people would refuse to buy an IPhone, besides cost.

I want an IPhone, but 90 dollar a month basic plans aren't something for college students. I'm getting an HTC Touch Pro, which costs 99 bucks, and is a rather decent, nice looking phone with a pull out physical keyboard. Also, Cellular South offers a smartphone plan that's 50 dollars a month with unlimited texting and data... probably the cheapest smartphone plan in the US.

I was going to get the touch pro but everyone who has it hates it.

Cellular South doesn't have a good selection of phones. I know the HTC sucks, but otherwise I pretty much can't afford a smartphone. I dunno, I could get the Blackberry Curve 8300, but that's horrendously outdated.

Or I could wait a while and get the Blackberry Tour, or wait even longer and see if the Touch Pro2 is any good. :dunno:

I too am a Verizon customer. Their coverage rocks! I have been at 10,000 feet Above Albuquerque and had four bars. Been in the middle of the Desert between Las Cruces and Tucson and had four bars. They have NEVER failed me. I WAS an AT&T customer before and the same cannot be said. AT&T is great in metro areas and shit in the boonies. If Verizon can get iPhones I might be interested, but the prices are going to have to come down. I would like a smart phone that I could link to Outlook, I don't know that iPhone does that.
