Actually, that has been a position. The primary lie that has been floated is that #Defund didn't mean to slash the size and budgets of police forces, but, merely to reallocate resources around. The spike in crime laid that canard to rest.

Meanwhile, Minneapolis had an actual ballot initiative to abolish the police department. The NIMBYS there voted it down for some reason.
