Ted Kennedy Couldn't Confess to Mary Jo's Family: Book

Ted Kennedy couldn't bring himself to confess to the family of the woman he killed in a car accident how she died.

A new biography "Ted Kennedy: The Dream That Never Died" reveals the longtime senator has been tormented by guilt for more than four decades and visited the parents of Mary Jo Kopechne twice after her death but could never speak of how she died, the New York Daily News reported.

"Ted had us come to his house in McLean [Va.], saying he wanted to talk," Mary Jo's late mother Gwen said in the book. "But [the visit] was uncomfortable -- for all of us."

"Ted led us to believe he was going to explain what really happened. But when the time came, after plenty of small talk, he said he just couldn't talk about it," she said. "It was very puzzling. Twice we drove all the way down there [from Pennsylvania] and twice he couldn't talk about how our daughter died."

While Kennedy deserves no respect for his actions at Chappaquidick, the writer of this book isn't exactly the epitome of intellectual rigor.

"Klein's books have been dismissed by academics and journalists as "not only psychobabble," but "psychoblarney." An example of the criticism:

The Boston Herald has quoted him calling the late Carolyn Bessette Kennedy "a disturbed, neurotic, unstable young woman"; according to the Buffalo News, Klein's book The Kennedy Curse described Bessette Kennedy "sprawled on the floor in front of a sofa, disheveled and hollow-eyed, snorting cocaine with a gaggle of gay fashionistas." The News book review called The Kennedy Curse "a contrived and stretched effort that seeks legitimacy by surrounding a few interesting scoops with historical and psychological analysis," adding of one Klein passage: "He takes a long and involved analysis of Ireland's Great Famine of the 1840s, links it to the emigration of JFK's great-grandfather to Boston, and applies enough psychobabble to explain everything from President Kennedy's womanizing to William Kennedy Smith's celebrated rape trial in 1991."[2]

He came under fire for his biography of Hillary Clinton entitled, The Truth about Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She'll Go to Become President which was released on June 21, 2005. On the day of its release Sean Hannity interviewed him on the radio. Radio host Al Franken, along with Joe Conason interviewed him on Air America that month as well. During the interview, Franken and Conason exposed inaccuracies in Klein's book, including incorrect names and deliberate omissions from quotes with the intention to deceive the reader.[3] Klein claimed that he was not told that Conason, who had authored The Hunting of the President in defense of the Clintons, would join the interview, but Franken asserted that Klein's publicist was informed that Conason would help conduct the interview."

Yeah, let's do body counts.

Yo, so the wingnuts are apoplectic about a lady who drowned half a century ago.

Whatever happened that night, Kennedy bears a a lot of responsibility. His crap driving, at a minimum killed someone.

It’s obviously Republican trolling. Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have spent two decades ordering the republican base to obsess about half century old drowning.

Check it out: this is the same republican base the worships Reagan, a man responsible for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of unnecessary deaths. A man who trained an unleashed rightwing death squads on central America. A man who ignored HIB/AIDS because of his homophobia, while tens of thousands of Americans died. A man who was enamored with despotic rightwing dictators, and an enabler of oppression. And how many innocent people has George Dumbya Bush been responsible for killing and torturing, with the support and cheerleading of people who voted for him?

Hey man, Kennedy ain’t no hero. He fucked up that night on the bridge.

Yet, we all know that republican trolls and republican presidents have more blood on their hands than kennedy ever did. Yurt, I think you've been an enabler of more death, torture, and bloodshed than kenney ever was.

is there something about this book or article that is not true? or are you here merely as an attack the messenger drone?

I own one of his other books about the Kennedys and he mixes in a lot of supposition and conjecture with the facts. For instance, he claims that Jack Kennedy had a longstanding venereal disease...how would he know that? Also, he uses the technique of novel writing, putting words in their mouths based on what he thinks they would have said in the circumstances.

Yurt has a new obsession.

A week or so ago, he probably didn't know what "Chappaquidick" meant.

Too much talk radio.

it really bothers you that kennedy kill mary jo doesn't it.....how "obsessive" of me to talk about the woman he killed....amazing that you would rather spend time insulting me for mentioning it,rather than spending time condemning the death.....
