Whitehall said US President Obama and Hillary Clinton's reaction to Abdelbaset Al Megrahi's release was 'disingenuous'
Downing Street has hit back at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton for attacking the decision to release the Lockerbie bomber.

President Obama and the US Secretary of State fuelled a fierce American backlash against Britain, claiming Abdelbaset Al Megrahi should have been forced to serve out his jail sentence in Scotland – but a senior Whitehall aide said their reaction was ‘disingenuous’.

British officials claim Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton were kept informed at all stages of discussions concerning Megrahi’s return.

The officials say the Americans spoke out because they were taken aback by the row over Megrahi’s release, not because they did not know it was about to happen.

‘The US was kept fully in touch about everything that was going on with regard to Britain’s discussions with Libya in recent years and about Megrahi,’ said the Whitehall aide.

‘We would never do anything about Lockerbie without discussing it with the US. It is disingenuous of them to act as though Megrahi’s return was out of the blue.

'They knew about our prisoner transfer agreement with Libya and they knew that the Scots were considering Megrahi’s case.’

Mr Obama said Megrahi’s release on compassionate grounds was a ‘mistake’ while Mrs Clinton phoned the Scottish administration to complain in person.

Dear England and Scotland,

Please conduct your countries autonomously and ignore anything we have to say.

Love,
Citizens of America

When running towards the cliff with other lemmings, you probably can't hear people calling you out over all the high fives.

Whatever you say. Obviously, you think you are always right and the rest of us are always wrong. It doesn't faze me, I have been called worse.

"The US was kept fully in touch about everything that was going on with regard to Britain's dicussions with Libya IN RECENT YEARS and about Megrahi". Your red highlighted line.

Wasn't it Rice and bush that were in charge during most of those "recent years"? What did they do about it?

Nah. I'm wrong my fair share of times. But for the last couple of years, I've really come to understand that partisan worship is what creates our messes.

You pick a team and stick with it no matter what, and you oppose the other team no matter what, country be damned.

The irony is that both teams are in cahoots to keep all other teams out and to galvanize as many of you as they can, and you're sitting there allowing them to use you as pawn.

So, again, congratulations in being a cog in the wheel. Nothing will ever change so long as the parties have their lemmings, and especially when the lemmings don't even recognize that they are lemmings.

Uh, huh!! You should stop assuming so much. I don't like the direction Obama is taking this country. He is dividing this country, not uniting, as he had promised. He has too many broken promises and he says one thing and does another. That is not what I want in a president. I don't trust him. Yes, he is charming, articulate and a very good speaker, but it takes a lot more than that to be a good president.

There are several Democrats I would vote for and one would be Senator Evan Bayh. I have tremendous respect for the man and I think he would be good for this country. So don't tell me I would follow the party line, because you don't know what you are talking about.

Wow you'd vote for a conservative Democrat. Thanks.

There are no federal Republicans I'd vote for. I'm not going to play the non-partisan game. Democrats are different than Republicans. They have a different philosophy. And if nothing else, they have a tendency to support each others policies. Voting for a Democrat when you're a Republican means you're retarded, not that you're above the fray.

Man, I wish Ornot were here. He would remember, I'm sure, how in 2004 the AOL conservatives would claim they would vote for a John Edwards or a Wes Clark-type Democrat.

That is, until both those dudes actually entered the democratic primary, and then the AOL rightwing went ballistic on both of them. Good times!
