Barbados just a few months ago removed Queen Elizabeth as head of state, and became a Republic. The empire's collapse continues.
The UK hoped that Brexit would mean that they could establish better ties with their former empire. The problem is their former empire wanted to establish better ties to the EU through the UK. The UK was seen as a bridge to the EU by their former empire (including the USA), but now they are a bridge to nowhere.
They are still a NATO nation, so still can be useful in defense. Biden has worked with them well on the defense front.

There is no way for Ukraine to join NATO. They have already been invaded, so the second they joined NATO we would be at war with Russia. Maybe if they gave up the occupied land, or Russia gave up the occupied land... But I doubt either will happen anytime soon.
Ukraine could join the EU, much like Cyprus did(40% of Cyprus is occupied). Through the EU they could be transformed into a modern, liberal democracy with a prosperous economy. This would show the Russians that Western values can work in Ukraine, and therefore could work in Russia.
We just need the current war to end, and all sorts of great things are possible. Those great things will hurt Putin, so that is another reason for him not to end the war.
It is good to see that even without NATO membership, the support Ukraine's getting and how Zelinsky, A FORMER COMEDIAN is like the 21 Century Winston Churchill.
I like it when people and countries pleasantly surprise me. The opposite happens so often.

There is no way that Ukraine can join the EU this decade, they maybe could be part of EFTA but even that's unlikely.
I see what you are saying, but technically they are not. Russians are dying in great numbers, but are not being sent home in coffins. Assumably their corpses are being stored somewhere in or around the Ukraine.
Storing corpses is easy due to the Russian tradition of cremating corpses close to the front. They can literally be thrown in a plastic bag, marked, and forgotten about... Or thrown in a pile behind a tent. Storing the injured troops is much more difficult. For every dead soldier, there are maybe five injured soldiers that still need to be fed, clothed, and housed, but Putin does not want to send home. I have no idea how Putin is handling that mess.
OMG!!! You are fucking kidding me! They're not returning their dead soldiers to their families in Russia? It sounds believable but what a fucking horrible way for Putin to treat his citizens. Again.. long and painful death for Putin would be awesome.

Putin is so horrible, Geez. I mean, their families have to know something's up if they haven't heard from their sons and daughters who went to war. Russians know satellite and cell phones work.
Putin is trying to ban communication from the Russian troops home. There are families that do not know their loved one is dead, and has been dead for months. They just think he is being banned from calling home.
The Russian troops are stealing cell phones from Ukrainian civilians to communicate with one another, but also to communicate back home. Outside of that, it is positively medieval. It is the most bizarre combination of conditions you would expect a thousand years ago, with the internet age.
We live in a bizarre combination of an age of real life science fiction, and a dark age. It is very bizarre.
Churchill was a journalist, who was a borderline comedian, so the comparison is apt.
I was amazed that Ukraine held out for more than a week. I honestly thought they had maybe 72 hours, but certainly not more than a week or organized resistance. After that, I thought they might have some guerrilla fighting, but certainly not an organized country.
I am in awe of the Ukrainians. They have surprised me in the most pleasant way possible.
When Putin's invasion began I remember a news story where Ukrainians were taking in young Russian solders who did not know what the fuck they were doing there, feeding them and lending the Russian kids their phones so they could call home. In the midst of the tragedy, its good to have at least one heartwarming story.
If Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria can join the EU, why not Ukraine? Well Ukraine is larger, but Poland is also larger. Heck, a huge number of Ukrainians have already "joined" the EU by taking up the EU's generous asylum offer. The main argument against giving Ukraine membership is that it would allow Ukrainians to travel freely to the EU... Well they are currently allowed to travel freely to the EU.
Getting Ukraine up to western/EU standards will be difficult, but made easier by the destruction of a lot of the previous infrastructure by the war. And the EU has done this upgrading many times before.
Once this war is over, I expect Ukraine to start moving towards joining the EU. It might take a decade, but I doubt much more than that. Both sides will be highly motivated. They will not languish in purgatory like the Turkish... The poor Turkish in perpetual EU candidacy.
There are huge numbers of stories like that. Ukrainians can easily call, and email friends in Russia. It is a war in the smart cell phone age.
