A British film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer.

The film was chosen to open the Toronto Film Festival and has its British premiere on Sunday. It has been sold in almost every territory around the world, from Australia to Scandinavia.
However, US distributors have resolutely passed on a film which will prove hugely divisive in a country where, according to a Gallup poll conducted in February, only 39 per cent of Americans believe in the theory of evolution.
Movieguide.org, an influential site which reviews films from a Christian perspective, described Darwin as the father of eugenics and denounced him as "a racist, a bigot and an 1800s naturalist whose legacy is mass murder". His "half-baked theory" directly influenced Adolf Hitler and led to "atrocities, crimes against humanity, cloning and genetic engineering", the site stated.
The film has sparked fierce debate on US Christian websites, with a typical comment dismissing evolution as "a silly theory with a serious lack of evidence to support it despite over a century of trying".
Jeremy Thomas, the Oscar-winning producer of Creation, said he was astonished that such attitudes exist 150 years after On The Origin of Species was published.
"That's what we're up against. In 2009. It's amazing," he said.
"The film has no distributor in America. It has got a deal everywhere else in the world but in the US, and it's because of what the film is about. People have been saying this is the best film they've seen all year, yet nobody in the US has picked it up.
"It is unbelievable to us that this is still a really hot potato in America. There's still a great belief that He made the world in six days. It's quite difficult for we in the UK to imagine religion in America. We live in a country which is no longer so religious. But in the US, outside of New York and LA, religion rules.
"Charles Darwin is, I suppose, the hero of the film. But we tried to make the film in a very even-handed way. Darwin wasn't saying 'kill all religion', he never said such a thing, but he is a totem for people."
Creation was developed by BBC Films and the UK Film Council, and stars Bettany's real-life wife Jennifer Connelly as Darwin's deeply religious wife, Emma. It is based on the book, Annie's Box, by Darwin's great-great-grandson, Randal Keynes, and portrays the naturalist as a family man tormented by the death in 1851 of Annie, his favourite child. She is played in the film by 10-year-old newcomer Martha West, the daughter of The Wire star Dominic West.
Early reviews have raved about the film. The Hollywood Reporter said: "It would be a great shame if those with religious convictions spurned the film out of hand as they will find it even-handed and wise."
Mr Thomas, whose previous films include The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, said he hoped the reviews would help to secure a distributor. In the UK, special screenings have been set up for Christian groups.

What they really meant to say was, "Those jew bastards who run Hollywood thought the movie sucked, so I am going to blame it on the religious conservatives hoping to find a sucker to distribute."

I find it hard to believe that in a country which had major box office hits in Hellraiser 1, Hellraiser 2, and Hellraiser 3, that the reason nobody wants this film is because it's about Darwin and Christians might not like it......

In reading the intro I was saddened and embarrassed. Reading further, I'm outraged. Is it really possible that 61% of people in the U.S. reject the theory of evolution? Today, in the first decade of the 21st Century?

Even the Pope has stated publicly that there is no conflict between the bible and evolutionary theory; the latter, contrary to what many apparently believe, does not address the origin of life. Despite his keen insight, Darwin unfortunately chose "origin" in naming his work "The Origin of Species". Note, however, that this is not "The Origin of Life".

I'm skeptical about the numbers in the cited poll, though. I wonder whom they asked.

Apples & oranges. I'm sure there are some fundies who don't like the Hellraiser flicks, just as there are some who don't like Harry Potter, but there is still the caveat that they are fictional & completely made up.

Darwin hits a little too close to home...

Sadly I have to agree with you. Controversy sells and if this was that controversial the distributors would be all over it like a fly on stink. No the sad fact of the matter is, is that American Audiences just won't give a shit about the subject and would rather watch Hellraiser or Speedracer.

Sadly Thorn people like you and I are in part to blame. If we did a better job of teaching this subject maybe there wouldn't be such vast numbers who are so ignorant and hostile about this unifying principle of Biology.

In this case I think PiMP is actually right. Personally many evengelicals who disparage Darwin's theory would watch this movie out of intelectual curiosity and so that they, if not persuaded, could criticise and or refute it. No. No US distributors want this because they have a condescending attitude (with a great deal of justification) about the American public. They think were dumber than shit and not interested in something as deep as this movie. If the producers of this movie had made an equally compelling though less controversial movie about the life of Sir Isaac Newton I doubt that would get a US distributor either.

Cast Bruce Willis as Newton and Alan Rickman as Liebniz. Have Liebniz kidnap Newton's wife, played by Keira Knightly, holding her hostage in a spooky German castle. Newton launches a daring rescue attempt, culminating in a matrix-style duel on the battlements in which Leibniz is killed by Newton's gravity-defying exploding apples, heroically saving Mrs Newton and securing calculus for the good guys.

Simples.

Alan Rickman ain't 'merican my brother.

So who would believe it?

:0)

The people who believe this hype are simply ridiculous. In a nation where "Ghost Hunters" and "UFO" shows are high on the list of watchable shows, along with every horror flick imaginable and F911 and other flicks it simply is unrealistic to believe this rubbish.

They are trying to get somebody to cover them and get it in the US because they figure they can get left wing kooks to believe that the religious freaks would have kept it out of here so they'll go watch it. It is likely it may be an effective marketing gimmick, seeing the reaction of left-wingers here.

I wish that were true. Even that's better then knowing that the average American just really doesn't give a shit about science or science related subjects.

Saying they don't care isn't the same thing as saying it was "dangerous" because of the religious. That's just silly.

Classsic man. Porno films do their best business per capita in the Red States, but the Jesus freaks can't handle a little science.

This Brit dude isn't hip at all to the U.S. Doesn't this Brit producer know that three of the Republican Presidential candiates are on record for not believing in evolution. Four, if you include Ron Paul. A party that nominated a Vice Presidential candidate who apparently thinks humans co-existed with dinosaurs. Give it up, Brit dude! Just market it to the blue states!
