No. Pintos would catch fire if someone rear-ended them, as the fuel tank was mounted low and right behind the rear differential (mashing the fuel tank into the differential and setting it on fire).

Teslas burn just sitting there while parked. No one hit them.
Worse, as described in the OP, the driver was unable to escape the vehicle without taking extraordinary measures, even though he knew it was on fire. Luckily he was able to break a window to escape.

What if a small child or a passenger unable to break the window was in the car with him?
