Florida book bans - the first step before burning

Notice that she's never posted a shred of evidence about being a teacher? No pictures, no redacted pay stubs or certificates? Worst of all, she'd never displayed the characteristics of an experienced teacher.

No, she never has, not in the 12 long years of me being stalked by the deranged creature. Not a single anecdote about a funny incident in the classroom, not a success story about a student she allegedly helped to achieve, not a tale of an amusing or inspiring coworker -- nothing. Just the repeated false claim, with no proof, that she was a teacher and now enjoys a pension. Moreover, as pointed out earlier, her very posts indicate a person of poor education, emotional issues, and bitter envy of her betters.

Yep. Still there. :rofl2:

I have been posting for many years about my teaching career...my experiences... as well as my coaching... that's because I was a teacher and a coach;)

Only at the bottom of a vodka bottle, dear. You've never offered any evidence, only claims. You've never demonstrated the maturity and demeanor of an experienced, retired teacher.

You've only demonstrated you are a bitter, spiteful drunk.

Meanwhile: https://flcertify.fldoe.org/datamart/searchByNameFLDOE.do...yep..still there...

Next fall, there will be fewer teachers in Florida than there were last fall. Florida was already in bad shape, so this will be a very bad thing.

Top will be debating then that it is not the book banning, but something else. She will be partly right. There are many things that DeSantis is doing wrong at once.

There will be other draconian rules going into effect over the next years, and they will drive even more teachers out of the profession. Teachers salaries will continue to erode. And the blatant hatred of teachers will continue to get worse.

And Florida will continue to lose teachers.

What is DeSantis' plan? Hiring uneducated teachers with ties to right wing groups, and giving them guns to "patrol the schools." These are not sounding like schools anymore. And I am sure more real teachers will leave rather than dealing with fake teachers with guns.

I'm still trying to figure out how hiring retired vets to teach is useful. What are they going to give instruction on, how to field-dress an M16? Humvee maintenance? Drone-flying? How to look busy if a superior happens to come by? Counting the days till I get out of this mess mathematics? lol I'm sure that many veterans do have advanced education and knowledge, but how does that translate to teaching civilian kids the basics they need? And if you ARE a retired vet with a degree, why would you want to get back in that rat race and be treated like crap -- the reason the teacher before you left?

That's because you're a Democrat. :)

Yes, but only by default. I wish we had a better party that I could chose.

On many issues, Democrats would be considered very right wing in any other first world country. Republicans are so far right wing that most first world countries consider them outside the mainstream. I do not know that I would be willing to go as far left as many Western Europeans are, but I would certainly like that point of view in the public discourse.

For instance, health care. Most countries have a debate of how they should get to universal healthcare. I tend to think multi-payer (the most conservative solution, and the Obama/Biden solution) is probably the best, but I would like the other solutions debated. Instead, we have the debate over whether we should have universal healthcare or not. No one in mainstream Europe is debating there should not be universal healthcare, but the Republicans are.

This leads to a Democratic Party willing to compromise with evil, and a Republican Party that is the evil they are willing to compromise with.

Agreed that Republicans have put themselves on a path to disaster.

While Democrats are not doing enough to get us off that path to disaster. Actual evil is worse than not doing enough to fight evil. The two are not equivalent.

This began, IMO, at the end of the Cold War and they needed a new platform.

You are extremely correct with that. Republicans just seem directionless since the end of the Cold War. All they have is conspiracy theories, and "wedge issues".

Agreed; you continue to make claims without a shred of proof and you clearly lack the personality and demeanor of a retired teacher.

Meanwhile, I've demonstrated both physical and personality evidence. :)

A couple of my kids had IEPs as students because they had minor learning disabilities. So not only am I the mother of an actual, credentialed special education teacher, I am the mother of students who needed the assistance provided by sped educators. Not a single one of them would have EVER attacked a person with mental disabilities and special needs the way we've all seen Toxic go after people here, and after celebrities (like Thunberg, for one) for their mental issues. No actual, compassionate, caring teacher would think doing of such a vile thing. She gets verklempt if someone uses the "retard" insult, yet thanks the posts where one of her defenders calls someone she hates by that very label. She is a disgusting disgrace to her claimed profession. Whatever school the sick slut once worked in is lucky she's gone.

Is there a reason why Lig abandoned you to become Pointer? Was it the drinking? I know it's not the racism. LOL

Yes, it is true you have claimed, in the 12 years I've had the misfortune to know you, that you were a teacher and a coach. You even used to use a picture of some minors in a green swimming pool for your avatar. In all that time though, you've never offered any proof. Not a single story about a special coworker, an interesting student, what subjects you taught, any awards won, nothing. Just a claim with no details. As we've all noted, none of your posts give any indication that you managed to make it past middle school, let alone college. You spell, write, and emote like a fifth grader. I bet you still put little hearts over your letter Is and Js too, don't you?

I'm still trying to figure out how hiring retired vets to teach is useful.

DeSantis is trying to get unemployed right wing veterans into schools. This is not a program for Black veterans. It is targeted only at the most right wing veterans. He is also talking about having them armed, though they would not be educated. It is all about changing the environment of the school from a school to something else.

He did a similar thing with the vaccination centers. The Federal Government setup vaccination centers, but DeSantis surrounded them with "private security." Many of the "private security" were ex-cons. These right wing nut jobs controlled who would get access to the vaccines.

And if you ARE a retired vet with a degree, why would you want to get back in that rat race and be treated like crap -- the reason the teacher before you left?

There are already programs to get veterans teaching licenses. If you have a degree, it is actually quite easy. It does not even need to be a degree in teaching.

DeSantis wants uneducated veterans, rather than educated veterans we already have.

"We get the government we deserve". Better parties are made by the voters, not the leaders, since without the voters, the party would collapse.

Agreed, the US, including Democrats, are further right than most of the world. Most of the world is socialist. :)

Compromising with evil to stop evil is like fucking for virginity and bombing for peace.

Agreed on the current Republican Party...and I don't see them changing anytime soon, even though they appear to be pulling back from the brink of actual insanity.

Ron DeSantis is still riding on Trump's White Supremacist coattails, but that may blow up in his face when it comes to garnering votes in a national election. Most Americans dislike Nazis, White Supremacists and other haters.

The present tactic seems to be for Florida's far Right leadership to pass vague laws then threaten or selectively prosecute teachers for violating the law and/or abusing children. Due to low pay, most teachers can't afford defending themselves in court so they simply remove all and any books that could violate the law as interpreted by RW wackadoodles.

There is no ban list, just the power of the State to threaten the freedom of teachers and their livelihood. This is more insidious than simply producing a banned list of books like the Torah, the Quran and Catcher in the Rye because it intimidates teachers and school administrations to simply get rid of anything that might be controversial. The effect will be a generation of ignorant Floridian voters who won't be able to compete with better educated Americans. In the end, Florida will become dumber and poorer in the quest to make Florida white again.

It seems to me that the school system should be totally neutral on the subject of gender and gender selection, without promoting either point of view. Books like “Gender Queer: A Memoir.” seems to violate that standard in my opinion.

And that is TDS at its "finest"...;)
thread derail complete... I'll be back later to discuss book evaluation ...or PM if you like... I'll consider giving you my email ..
that's the best way to really discuss things if you're serious about wanting to understand what's going on in schools these days...and how you can help...
;)

The good teachers aren't going anywhere... and those who have a passion for teaching and want to teach will be applying for jobs...

My wife's great grandmother had a passion for teaching, but there was an outer limit, and she left teaching, and Berlin. Learning English well enough to teach in the USA was difficult, so she never returned to teaching.

I guess it really is how much shit teachers are willing to take, but there is a limit. Sending armed right wing lunatics into the schools to enforce mandates will be a major line crossed, like it was with my wife's great grandmother, but so is the reducing wages to well below market rates.

What is the purpose of having untrained and/or poorly-educated alt-right vets as teachers, other than to fill an empty spot in a classroom? Are they meant to cow the kids into obedience? Espouse RW ideas? Give the kids the impression that the military is the best career move? Why can't Black veterans apply?

It is true that whether you are civilian or vet, if you have a BS degree you can get a teaching certificate. That's what my son-in-law did; he has a BS in mathematics and now teaches middle school math. I don't have a BS, yet, but even I am considered qualified to serve as a substitute teacher.

It's a shame that she couldn't find a way to be comfortable in the profession..My dad taught for 42 years... in a time of many difficult challenges.. each individual is different but those with a passion find a way

Our family members' who are teachers have told us about the active shooter drills, but so far none have involved being shot at or even having LEOs on scene to assist in the drills. <-- And this is the other big thing wrong with education in America today. Who the fuck wants to go to work worrying about being shot to death?

I am, of course, talking about the worst. That being said, what is the worst 1% now, will soon be the worst 40%. It is just how America seems to work these days.

Exactly. Keep in mind here that Toxic TOP, on another forum long ago, virulently attacked Mrs. Obama multiple times for her exercise and nutrition for kids FLOTUS projects. She mocked her "man arms" "big booty" and said repeatedly that as FLOTUS she had no business telling schools what to serve the kids, or that they should exercise and move more, because according to Toxic, she was "fat." And this from a person who not only claims to have brought food for kids to school, but who also has claimed to be some kind of sports coach as well.

That is just silly. Mrs. Obama was (and is) of a healthy weight for her age. Obama's suggestions were very good. Making school food healthier is a very good idea.

And making school food more available is a good idea. Even if Toxic Top did hand out a little free food (doubtful, but hypothetically if), that would go almost no way to solving the problem.

Why is it a violation? Is there is a difference between offering book choices for book reports and forcing students to be gay? Yes, there is.

This thread is about banning books in school libraries, not limiting them to age levels or restricting them from being taught per se.

As I recall, my teachers always offered a list of books to chose from for book reports. The logic being that students would be more likely to read something they liked.

When I was in the Third Grade, "Moby Dick" was one choice, but it looked boring after I flipped through it in the school library. A friend offered an alternative choice; Robert Heinlein's "Have Space Suit, Will Travel". That single book ignited my passion for reading. Within the year I had read every SF book in the elementary school library; mostly Asimov, Clarke and Heinlein.

By Sixth Grade, I was reading on the college level and routinely saved my allowance for used book stores and public library sales. A paperback copy of Merriam-Webster was a constant companion to look up words I didn't understand.

IMO, banning books never ends well. Restricting to "age appropriate" is fine with me.

PS. I've never read "Moby Dick". I have read Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land". :)

I have no doubt that your father was a teacher and, like your sister, that you really, really wanted to be a teacher yourself.

So what happened? Addiction? Pregnancy? Mental illness? No drive to complete college? Too cool for school?
