Obama: U.S. must reverse course with Indians
President meets with tribal leaders, saying "I'm on your side"

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama assured American Indians on Thursday that they have a place in his White House and on his agenda, telling tribal leaders their marginalized community deserves more from its government.

"I get it. I'm on your side," Obama told the largest gathering of tribal leaders in U.S. history.

Obama devoted part of his own time Thursday and even more of his administration's attention toward renewing relations with American Indians. He opened a conference that drew leaders from 386 tribal nations — the first meeting of its kind in 15 years — and he ordered every Cabinet agency to take more steps toward more cooperation.

Considering the terribly sorry state of Indians on reservations in every state in the union, I don't see how you can criticize the President for acknowledging their concerns by pledging to be on their side.

You have to be really ignorant to not know what kind of terrible poverty they live in. Look up some of the reservations in South Dakota. Pine Ridge literally has a third-world standard of living.

Identity politics- everyone is a victim and the good ole guberment is here to help...

that is how the Democrat-Progressive party plays the game..

You've got to be a spoof. There is no way in the world you could write the above about Native Americans in all seriousness. There's just no fucking way.

Maybe they can help the Native Americans like they helped the blacks...

i understand completely ib1. my point is, that (at least in /.';//WA and CA) governors are taking responsibility for this. maybe i am reading to much into this, but it seems like johnny come lately obama the knight in shiny armor is coming along....

most of the things that benefit the reservations are not federal, they are state. thus, IMO, obama is acting like the big man on campus for no reason.....

are you actually serious.....

we fucking destroyed the indians. right or wrong, it was done. many times wrong, and sometimes right. regardless, we have today's world. the indians are not the peace loving people that some liberals would paint them to be.....but to say we are the same, in that, we are all native americans, isn't quite true. might be true in another few hundred years. but not now.

that might be too much information for some to take in..

Casinos are popping up on Indian land all over California. Now I have no idea how that money gets used within the Native American community if its spread to the people or just stays with a few Indian big wigs. And within CA they do carry quite a bit of political clout.

If I was an Indian I would much rather hear the President is on my side than against me. Ultimately at the end of the day it's just rhetoric unless something is done.

You're criticizing for absolutely no reason. The treaties that establish those reservations are federal, not state from my understanding. So the Federal government has a definite role to play.

Here's the last president's thoughtful, well-informed take on tribal relations with the federal government.
