After layoffs, SEIU president complains about city's use of volunteers, contractors

In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park.

Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city's largest municipal union.

Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is considering filing a grievance against the city for allowing Anderson to clear a 1,000-foot walking and biking path at Kimmets Lock Park.

"We'll be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails," Balzano told the council.

Balzano said Saturday he isn't targeting Boy Scouts. But given the city's decision in July to lay off 39 SEIU members, Balzano said "there's to be no volunteers." No one except union members may pick up a hoe or shovel, plant a flower or clear a walking path.

"We would hope that the well-intentioned efforts of an Eagle Scout candidate would not be challenged by the union," said Mayor Ed Pawlowski in an e-mail Friday. "This young man is performing a great service to the community. His efforts should be recognized as such."

Balzano said Saturday the union is still looking into the matter and might cut the city a break.

"In the spirit of the holiday, we decided to let that go," Balzano said.

Gee they are just monsters huh.

They laid off arround 17 people and now have to hire out the work these people used to do.

Do you give a rats ass about those families trying to live without jobs while the city pays someone else their pay?

You really do hate the majority of your fellow Americans dont you.

hahaha, it must be rough to be a bleeding heart liberal all the time..
but then again it seems they don't ever have to deal in reality if they are one....sheeesh

You are the one that posted an article and then ignored the parts of the story that showed who was being fair and who was being screwed in this case.

17 people are without jobs to feed their families and all you can think of is that you hate unions.

I wonder how many of them are veterans?

My house is already rented. They dont need a house they need a job. Why did the city lay off workers that they needed?

You hate them and celebrate thier misfortune bacause they are union members.

I feel for them because I care about my fellow Americans. You seem to hate them and also me because I care about them.

Hating people for caring for each other is pretty low.

Maybe if you had educated yourself and or gotten a union job you would not need two jobs.

If Bush had not been president you definately would not need two jobs to survive.

As conservatives like to say, greed is good. You guys accept it as free market capitalism when corporations protect their markets, but scream bloody murder when workers do the same.

city had to hire an outside union electrician to oversee the installation for the popular Lights on the Parkway holiday display.

Well what about this poor union electrician, ...doesn't he deserve a job too....what about his livelihood ?....must the city hire 10 union workers to do a simple job that one worker can do???....fool

Should the city favor the SEIV union thugs over the IBEW ?

so in your twisted liberal view, the "someone else" who is getting paid doesn't deserve the pay....only union members

Obviously they didn't need them. The building trades are down about 50% here. I can only imagine what they are in Allentown. That means that they don't need as many inspectors, traffic cops, trash collectors, etc. Do you think that the taxpayers of Allentown should pay these folks to do nothing?

Cities and towns are laying off people all over the frickin' country. It's called the goddamn economy is in the tank and unemployment is at an all time high.

Unions notoriously go after city and town governments and special districts. When I was a fresh faced new employee, I thought Unions were a good thing for employees until I discovered that all the power goes to the largest body of of the bargaining unit and whether you believe it or not, your dues go to support the unions political interests and you don't have a say in it at all.

I opted out of the union when we were given a sunset period many years ago. Fortunately I am salaried and not hourly. I wouldn't have the union represent me even if I was covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Our union is as useless as teets on a bull. I'd hire my own attorney and I have several in the family.

All time high? Really? You really think that 10% is an ALL TIME HIGH? Shows how much you kneejerk reactionaries know about history.

The wonderful leadership of SEIU:

http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/15/union-and-whistleblower-complaint-documents-seiu-ballot-fraud/

Today’s Wall Street Journal and Fresno Bee report that SEIU engaged in illegal threats, ballot-tampering, and other serious violations of election rules during a June union election for 10,000 homecare providers in Fresno, according to voters and union staff who worked for SEIU during the election and have now come forward.

A sworn declaration from an SEIU whistleblower says that senior SEIU officials instructed organizers to violate election rules during the mail-in, secret-ballot vote, and then destroyed evidence of the violations. Statements from two former SEIU staff and several homecare providers were recently submitted to the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) as evidence accompanying a request to overturn the election results.
Among the illegal tactics reported:

SEIU staff tampered with workers’ ballots, by voiding the ballots of workers who marked their ballot for NUHW, and by collecting ballots directly from workers’ mailboxes.

Senior SEIU officials instructed staff to handle ballots in violation of election rule, and advised staff on how to do so in a way that was legally deniable.

SEIU organizers threatened Latino caregivers that SEIU would “call immigration” and have them deported in retaliation unless they voted for SEIU.

SEIU officials instructed staff to threaten and lie to voters that they would lose their wages, their health insurance, and even their jobs unless they voted for SEIU.
Whole release on the NUHW report here. The entire election fraud complaint filed with the California Public Employment Relations Board against SEIU is below.
