Obama Quietly Backs Patriot Act Provisions

by William Fisher

NEW YORK - With the health care debate preoccupying the mainstream media, it has gone virtually unreported that the Barack Obama administration is quietly supporting renewal of provisions of the George W. Bush-era USA Patriot Act that civil libertarians say infringe on basic freedoms.

And it is reportedly doing so over the objections of some prominent Democrats.

When a panicky Congress passed the act 45 days after the terrorist attacks of Sep. 11, 2001, three contentious parts of the law were scheduled to expire at the end of next month, and opponents of these sections have been pushing Congress to substitute new provisions with substantially strengthened civil liberties protections.

But with the apparent approval of the Obama White House and a number of Republicans – and over the objections of liberal Senate Democrats including Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Dick Durbin of Illinois – the Senate Judiciary Committee has voted to extend the three provisions with only minor changes.

Those provisions would leave unaltered the power of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to seize records and to eavesdrop on phone calls and e-mail in the course of counterterrorism investigations.

i wonder if the dems will exhibit the outrage they did when bush was in office....i know some will, but i really doubt we will see the same level of outrage...i could wrong....

gee, who would have thought that the dems outrage over these expanded powers being abused would have so easily been assumed to be legal by the new dem administration......and almost no outrage for that.

boggles the mind, it does.

Wouldn't be the 1st time...

:pke:

now who is starting it onceler? i haven't said a word to you today and you jump in with this....just like virtually every other day, but you love to claim its me that does this....

:corn:

btw, you're one of the dems i believe that doesn't support obama over this and are outraged over this...is this correct? and i am willing to bet you that i am right that the outrage over this will be extremely low as compared to when bush is in office.....

so far every single major obama supporter i've run this across has only been 'disappointed' over it. not outraged.

ah...that is a difference, because if i recall, they were outraged over it when bush was in office, but i wasn't on this board at that time so i don't know for this board

Why should I be "outraged" about it under Obama? I wasn't outraged about it under Bush.

As for libbies, go to a few libbie sites, check out the article, and then check the discussion about it. Libbies are "outraged." A lot of libbies I know don't like Obama very much.

You guys always try to find this mythical double-standard that you think libbies have, but conservatives don't. Across all spectrums, there are those with double-standards (see: mirror), but there is no "special" double standard libbies have.

i never said conservatives don't have double standards...more dishonest posting by onceler....

one thing is clear, is the media has a double standard...it was plastered all over the media when bush was in office, congressman, senators were against it....but, by and large, those people are now silent because a dem is in office...

politics as usual

Looks like the exact same "where's the outrage" thread to me.

Pretty embarassing.
:clink:

whats embarrassing is you don't know the difference between might support the bill....and then actually supporting it and working to get the bill finalized....

its the difference between a suspect and a convict, but it is clear you don't know the difference....

and it is also clear how much outrage in the media and liberal blogs there are over this....double standards are clearly abound in the democratic party

Have you checked the liberal blogs? People are screaming about this. As I have said, lots of libbies don't really like Obama or support what he is doing.

And your own article had Democrats in Congress objecting to the action.

I doubt you've really looked into it; you just want to believe something. Another fail, and yes, embarassment, because this is really the same post, no matter how you try to spin it.

:pke:

when it was bush it was plastered all over the media....its not even front page news today onceler....

stop watching soap operas
