Reagan was a legitimate contender who had a very real shot at unseating Ford.

Ford was unseated because Carter was elected, not Reagan.

And Ford had never been elected, so he only had a tenuous claim to legitimacy and the power of incumbency.

Ford WAS elected.

You also had to hop in your time machine and time travel back deep into the 20th century to find an example.

That is not opposition. There is no opponent for Biden at this time, except Kennedy. His age bothers people in a country that does not respect oldsters. Dems will bite their tongues and vote for Biden. Trump is almost as old and crazy.
