List five, the reasons why you think they should be cut and how much money We, the People, would save....if you can.
If you can't, I understand.
Five reasons why we should cut federal spending?
1. Many programs are redundant or duplications and unnecessary.
2. Much of the federal budget is mandated spending that cannot be cut. That should change immediately. No program should be off the table.
3. Eliminate mission creep in federal agencies. That is, pare back what agencies do to their core functions.
4. Reduce the volume of regulations and bureaucratic workload.
5. Eliminate government programs that are essentially 'give aways.'
My personal favorite is for a President to do this:
Sign an executive order that requires every agency of the federal government to produce an exact word, page, count of their current regulations in the federal register within so many days or have 10% of their budget withheld until they do. That means that becomes every agency's top priority until it's done.
Once you have those counts in hand and know they're accurate, you then by executive order require EVERY agency to remove by word and page count 10% of what they have in the federal register within one calendar year or that agency will lose an equivalent amount of its budget until that target is reached. Nothing in this order precludes or prevents new regulations or enforcement of current ones, only that the total word and page count be 10% less than it currently is.
What this means is that every agency will have to find any obsolete, redundant, or verbose regulations and remove or rewrite them to meet the target. Do this four-years running and you get a one third reduction in the number of pages of regulations in the federal register. This means that for everybody having to meet those regulations and for those administering them the process is simplified and costs less. The other benefit is you can now fire those government employees who were administering now gone regulations along with some others who are no longer needed with the simplified remaining regulations.
