Iraq Withdrawal

Obama pointed out that the military's request for troops wasn't a request to have troops before 2010, so he hasn't been denying any resources from the military effort while making his decision.

That's stupid, and childish. "Well you didn't say WHEN you wanted them". As if the general meant later rather than sooner.

I find this a bit puzzling.....there is very little fighting going on in Iraq.....Iraqi troops have taken over virtually all of the country....why do we need 100k+ troops there now?.........it also seems we have a few hundred thousand troops sitting in Germany and in Korea who aren't doing much of anything.....why are we calling up reservists?......

No, the general did say when. The request from the general said 2010.
The request from the general said "by" 2010 at the latest, it requested them sooner. Obama "massaged" the wording to make himself appear better, it's what politicians do.

The request made it clear that the status quo was not sustainable with the troop levels they have and that they would be going backwards if they didn't get more troops (even after the approval of more troops right at the beginning of his Presidency). It isn't as if the General was sitting there and hoping for more troops 7 months later, he wanted and needed them sooner rather than later.

Please provide a link for that. Because from what I remember the General stated he wanted more troops, but that even if enacted immediately it would be early 2010 before they could be spun up.

Now the projection is mid-2010 from what I have read.

In other words, the delay by Obama delayed the earliest potential arrival of the troops.
