What is woke about the lil mermaid?

You obviously care a lot.

You are the typical right wing snowflake.

It the owners of the media content want to remake their material with a slightly new spin, why should it rustle yo uso much? They have every right to and to try to sell it to a different audience.

As the audience changes they want to get them to buy as well. That is how business works and just repeating the exact same material the prior audience already saw and bought, is not a great way to attract new audiences.

Did you read comic books growing up? Long before people cried woke they were rotating new characters in for major characters to refresh the material.

that it bothers you magatards so much just shows how weak you are.

You're a babbling idiot repeating the same crap I already debunked because you have nothing else.

I have a long history here at JPP of being as virulent of an anti-Trump Democrat as any other leftist around here.

So your half-baked MAGA shit bounces off of me like a hollow little rubber ball off of a concrete wall.

You are weak.

Weak minded, weak kneed, weak spined, weak willed, weak of character.

And your debate skills reflect that weakness.

I just gave my opinion.

You are coming unglued.

Go sit at the kiddie table and play in the kiddie pool.

Where you belong.

Every movie should be judged in all of these contexts. Disney has not done well with live action remakes, the Lion King felt flat, and Pinocchio was a disaster. That being said, as a hUGE fan of the antimated version, I absolutely loved this film. Beautiful, heartfelt, and with characters that are far more flushed out than those in the original. Halle Bailey is star in the making. And the changes were not 'woke', they were positive in giving a whole person for Ariel to fall for, instead of a cutout Disney prince.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it. Unlike many Disney films, there was no in your face diversity, with the exception, perhaps, of the final scene, but I was still fine with it. All this idiotic anti-woke bullshit is exactly that. They are looking for a reason to be offended.

Trumppers, if you don’t like a movie because it has a black actress, don’t go see it. Stop crying about wokeness.

If someone wants to be “woke” it’s none of you or the government’s business.

It sure as shit is my business when I'm told I have committed "violence" against a sissy freak because I misgendered them. Stfu

Yeah kind of like the idiots who think whiteboards are racist. It's almost as if you people have no self awareness of your own behavior.

I still think it would be more beneficial for black actors to have new roles and new characters created for them.

What would be so difficult about using some real historical event as the backdrop to a fictional story in which a black person or group of black people were the protagonists? And it wouldn't have to be the tired old "fighting against prejudice and racism" theme they always default to.

Such stories could be about the valiant and heroic efforts of a group of black, common, ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances, working or struggling in support of a common cause, etc.

Authors like Ken Follet and Julian Fellowes are masters of the historical fiction genre.

If a movie like that was well done, with top notch production values, I'd go see it myself.

And as for animated characters, if Disney cannot create something as simple as an animated black character, then they've apparently outlived their mission.

Even if this Little Mermaid stuff is well intentioned as opposed to simple appeasement, it's still misguided IMO.

And I'm sticking to it.

Hmm. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Veterans Day, countless charities, parades, Honor Flights, Flag Day, GI Bill,** etc. etc. etc. But cry some more for us, Nancy, cry!

** Every single one of which these men and women earned, so don't even start the ridiculous mantra of "libtards hate the military."

Most remakes are regarded as inferior garbage when compared to the original.

Same is true with this garbage IMO.

As for "Why do I care so much?" I don't care that much. You posted this stupid fucking thread to try and stir up shit. Now you're offended because not everyone gave you the kind of answers you think they should.

Grow up.

Re: "How do I know why she was chosen?" Open up your fucking eyes and look around you. Casting black actors in roles of white characters in response to their accusations of racism is the current fad.

The BBC has even resorted to casting black actresses to play actual real historical white figures like Anne Boleyn, who we all know was so pale and white her skin was described almost see through.

In another TV adaptation of a novel written in 18th century Britain, "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling" (aka "Tom Jones"), the role of a wealthy young heiress who was obviously envisioned as white, was recently cast with a black actress.

Funnier yet, her mother and father were white!!! LOL! How did that happen???

And let's not forget Will Smith who was cast in Robert Conrad's iconic role of James West in the movie version of the classic TV show "The Wild, Wild West".

Anyway, my whole point has been why not just create new roles to showcase black actors, rather than appropriate white culture?

Do you not think black actors are worth the trouble and effort? Do you not think they are talented enough to develop new characters without having some white predecessor to lead the way for them?

Why are you such a racist?

That was stupid even for you.

And that's saying something.

Yes, and we all know that Denmark in the 1800's was just overflowing with black people who obviously would have inspired the characters he created.

Sure, I suppose you can IMAGINE fictional characters any way you want, and I have no problem with that.

The question I'm asking is WHY are we suddenly imagining theses characters as being ethnically different than they were created to be? Do you think it's merely because Hollywood is suddenly sensitive to such things, or are they spinelessly bowing to pressure for fear of being called racist?

In a vacuum, without all the false claims of victimhood by one group, it wouldn't be a question. But in the real world in which we live, viewed against the backdrop of the incessant, never ending squeak of the black wheel of society, it becomes obvious that what is going on is pure and simple appeasement. Pandering. White guilt manifesting itself everywhere you look.

I personally find that to be distasteful.

And BTW, are we free to imagine Anne Boleyn, one of King Henry's eight wives, as a dark skinned black woman of African descent?

Is it racist for people to expect at least a little bit of historical accuracy in their entertainment drama, or has TV just become such garbage that we're now expected to just swallow whatever they dish out and accept it?

I'm not willing to do that.

If one wants to jump to the conclusion that it's because I dislike blacks and call me a racist, go right ahead.

Changes nothing.

It's fine if you're the kind of limp-wrist who doesn't mind being on his knees and obeying the orders of those issuing demands.

Again, for the umpteenth time, I have no problem whatsoever with casting black actors in TV and movie roles. But why not just create new characters for them and give them the chance to be the original face and voice of that character going forward.

Just recycling old, used roles that white actors have already defined is like clothing them in handout rags from The Salvation Army.

Obviously, you think black actors are not capable of handling such roles or creating new characters.

I guess you're just a racist.

Only the gayest most effeminate self righteous shemales get all bitchy and hoity-toity over issues like this and start in with that tiresome, superior attitude shit.

I did not start this thread. I answered a question about why I thought casting a black actress to play the role of a fictional character whom everyone knows was created as white some two hundred years ago, is "woke".

I answered the question honestly, calmly and rationally.

And, as I expected, the same old crowd of enlightened beyond their common sense ding-a-lings, took umbrage and began throwing their usual hissy fits and hurling "the R word".

If this was about profit as you suggest, then they are going backwards. Blacks are only 12% of the population. My guess is that a significant percentage of them will never even see it. Your average young black residents in the hood, are not likely to be heading to the theater with their homies to see The Little Mermaid any time soon.

Maybe in your ridiculous fantasy world, but not in the real one.

Jesus Christ, Hell hath frozen over as I completely agree with your post. Well written.

My personal list of movie casting outrages

Unacceptable -->

Abraham Lincoln was played by a British actor, not an American one.

Oscar Schindler played by an Irishman, not a German actor.

The hobbits in LOTR were played by normal sized actors, not little people.

Any movie American actors feign fake English accents to portray Brits

I don't overthink movies. I watched the movie with the background that I absolutely loved the original. I enjoyed the hell out of the movie, the rest is just intellectual bs, sorry.
