What is woke about the lil mermaid?

If you haven't seen it you wouldn't understand... it's disappointed not twisted, btw... but really no surprise...Very predictable...

Tell me what is disappointing or is it just a feeling that you cant describe? (Seems twisted up, to me but Ill use your word)

There's quite a list.... you'll have to see both and then compare... or I guess you could Google it but you still might not understand...

Are you "disappointed" that Churches changed Jesus's color?

You do not believe movies have been made to appeal to specific "protected" groups since the start of movies? Silly.

Horseshit.

Somebody else was trying to pass off that nonsense yesterday. That QP person, I think.

The suggestion is that, in the early days of film and through the ensuing decades up to the point that wokeism and cancel culture reared their ugly heads and became a "thing", white people were the "protected group" and that all movies were made to "pander" to them.

Which is an utterly absurd notion.

Back then, fair or unfair, whites were by far and away the largest demographic in the nation and possessed nealy all of the disposable income. Therefore, they made up the vast majority of movie theater patrons who purchased tickets to get in. And because TV didn't start becoming popular until well into the 50's, there was no watching movies at home on TV, or TV commercial revenue generated by showing movies on TV.

Making movies for and about white people was only natural because it was simply a matter of common sense and economic reality. There was nothing contrived or any ulterior motive involved.

In the case of the recent Little Mermaid remake OTOH, it's obvious as can be, that the decision to cast a black actress was made solely to appease blacks in the wake of growing protests that have gotten louder recently, about black actors not getting enough leading roles.

And again, I'm personally all for giving them more leading roles even if it will result in their over representation.

But it would be better for them, the movie industry and everyone if they wrote and created new characters and films for blacks to star in rather than screwing around with old classics people would rather remember as they originally were.

You haven't seen it... and I'm not sure if you've seen the original so what good would it do to tell you what changes additions deletions were disappointing?

Yes... the animated version is very popular...A classic... which is why so many were disappointed in the changes... and despite what everyone is saying no one really cares that Ariel is biracial... especially me...;)

I assume that the latest iteration did not replace the original film, right?

We live in an age where digital files in the cloud
have replaced hard media like DVDs and Laserdiscs, even those horrid quality VHS tapes,
and I personally hate that. REALLY HATE THAT. VISCERALLY HATE THAT.
I WANT HARD COPIES ON MY SHELVES, GOD DAMN IT!!!!

But for whomever still has functioning playback equipment, I assume the animated original film is still around, no?

Don't mess with the classics... especially the Disney classics.. just make a whole new movie... and leave the M&Ms and Minnie and Mickey etc alone...lol

Yep, the original is still around, and it's my favorite of the newer Disney animated movies. But there is no question that some things have changed, and the slight modifications to the lyrics in almost every case were designed to represent Ariel as an empowered female (which scares the SHIT out of the nutters) rather than a victim subject to the whims of her Prince Charming. For example, one of the songs had a line directed towards the Prince, telling him to go for it without any type of consent. So it was slightly changed. A verse was removed from a song that basically said to little girls everywhere that they didn't need their voice to land a man, just their looks. Not a great message for girls, so it was removed. And they turned Prince Eric into a more three dimensional character rather than an avatar for the knight in shining armor. Also, IMHO, a positive change. They are not losing their minds because of the lyric changes per se. They are losing their minds because a black actress is offensive to them. It's racist to the core. Plain and simple.

OMFG, they've destroyed the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give me a fucking break. I can watch the old version on Disney Plus any time I want to.

You are correct... the original lives on... I have hard copies of every Disney movie and other Classics as well
Along with the equipment to play them... surprisingly everything works pretty well... I made some good quality stuff back in the days...;)

Funny thing is that the music in it leans heavily on black Caribbean music

It’s a natural for a black Ariel

I’ve seen the original several times.

Why are you so unwilling to share your “disappointments”?

It’s not like they erased the original, as you pointed out.

They did make a whole new movie! You are upset over it.

There's no point in having a discussion about what's different if you haven't seen the new one.... you can look up the differences... the changes the deletions the additions... if you like the ending in the original you'll hate the new one...

So why are her panties in such a wad?

Because she has been told that the movie is 'woke'. It isn't. It's a live remake of an animated movie. The choice for Ariel happened to be black. Therefore woke I guess. I have no idea. If you had never seen the original, you wouldn't look at this movie and claim it was woke. I hardly noticed the lyric changes. They are pretending this is about changing the lyrics. It isn't. It is entirely about the fact that a black actress was cast in the lead. She is absolutely fantastic.

The box office issues are restricted mainly to China and South Korea. Same reason. Racism. It is what it is.
