Supreme Court Rejects Voting Map That Diluted Black Voters’ Power

The Supreme Court, in a surprise decision, ruled that Alabama had diluted the power of Black voters by drawing a congressional voting map with a single district in which they made up a majority.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote the majority opinion in the 5-to-4 ruling. He was joined by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh and the court’s three liberal members, Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Yup. they rejected the Alabama arguments including the favorite one by racists here, as Alabama argues in part that even asking them to consider the impact of these drawn maps, on PoC, who live there, is against the 14th Amendment and the ideal that they should not be considering 'race' at all in these arguments and to make them examine the maps, with a race based consideration is the wrong here.

it is the same derp logic tried here to say 'fixing things to end discrimination by race, to get more PoC into key roles or to fairness in voting, is in fact what is wrong as then you are considering race and in an ideal world we just do not look at race at all'.

Glad to see the SC set some boundaries and elaborating a cause of action for a stream of new such lawsuits to be launched and succeed.

its not a surprise.....affirmative action cannot abide voting districts with only four corners......

Gerrymandering is a terrible crime against our election system. Yet 4 "judges" voted to continue it. It is cheating people out of the power of their votes.

Yes that can often be true.


If as we did, for well over 100 years, you had it so only white males could get all the jobs and all the management ranks, and then only in recent history do women and PoC get access to those jobs, there will need to be some programs, that you will call discrimination, needed to ensure QUALIFIED PoC and Women do get FAIR access to those jobs too.

The legacy of the prior years of abuse, that now see all sorts of white men, who got those jobs without the proper qualifications and procedures cannot just be to say 'let it fix itself over time' allowing for many more generations of abuse.

It is not discriminating. If you draw district lines that are contiguous, compact, and maintain a community of interests, you are likely to get a district with one dominant race. States drawing lines to reduce the voting strength of particular groups often resulted in wildly gerrymandered districts.

liar......the most gerrymandered districts in any state are created to CREATE districts that send black congressmen to Washington.......the districts that were contested in this case were districts which were too "contiguous, compact and maintained a community of interests"......

Districts drawn with a large black population were often done to 1) create a minority district; and 2) reduce black strength in other districts.

Such "racial gerrymandering" was declared unconstitutional years ago---keep up.

Irrelevant which party created them. The court found them unconstitutional. They were used by Democrats to increase black representation and used by Republicans to pack or crack districts to reduce black representation.
