Since my state (MI) has decided to ban smoking in all 'public' buildings, I'm going to hold a smoke out. Similar to a sit-in, I am going to gather people up, and have them sit/stand outside a government building, and light the fuck up. I may not smoke, but I'm sick and tired of this stupidity.

Anyways the point is I've never organized such a thing before, and am wondering if anyone has any advice. And ridicule, I need more of that, since I know it's coming anyways.

Boo hoo, Grinds 'people' (as if they were different then my people or the people I am fighting for) are jailed and he won't do a damn thing about it.

This is an awesome idea and I'll give you as much advice as I can. Send me an email with any questions you might think of: adam@adamweinberg.com

Here's a few things:

1) Make sure to send out media advisories well in advance of the event. Then follow up the day before and the day of to make sure the media shows up to what you're doing. Also, have lots of your own cameras from participants (photo and video) in case problems do happen, whether that's from opposition or the authorities giving you problems. And do a press release, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, whatever...immediately following or even during the event,

2) Make sure that the people you invite know what they're doing and have marching orders. Make sure they bring the right signs, clothes, slogans, and are speaking on the right messages. Too many rallies or events are bogged down by people bringing their pet issues. Make it visual and make sure the message is firmly controlled.

3)Get a very complete list of everyone who shows up (I mean, phone numbers, emails, hell, their bank account account and routing numbers if they want to give you money). Don't let the contacts go to waste and don't let people weasel out of giving you their phone numbers so you can call them to another event or opportunity to volunteer. Always sign the first line of the sign-up sheet so people know how to fill it up and can't say nobody else put their digits.

That's just the first couple thoughts on the top of my head. Seriously, let me know more about what you want to do and I'll get more ideas.

dude....I'm from Michigan....and I smoke.....but it's December....I'm not standing outside anything to protest anything until the snow melts....
 
Smoke does not stay in one place. It is not all your air ,that air also belongs to the people who have as much right to be in public as you do. Smoke is unhealthy and to some people with lung, throat, sinus and other conditions it is painful.

We wouldnt let you stand in a of a building and burn any other substance simply because you LIKE it now would we?

Man up smokers and take the responsibility for your own habit and realize others should NOT be forced to deal with the negative output of your dumber that shit passwtime.

Then do that for your own fucking self and DONT FORCE it on others by forcing them to join you in your intake of smoke

And if you own a business and have the same opinion that you don't want a certain type of customer, you're more than welcome to practice that philosophy. But don't force me or anyone else to do the same.
 
Capin' you have a choice to smoke elsewhere, the people who cant take your smoke should not be forced to breath elsewhere.

Breathing is not a choice , smoking is.
