I just ordered some Stossel in the Classroom DVD's to enhance my end of year instruction with some of my older kids....especially in Technology. These DVD's were created by John Stossel. Anyone ever hear of them or use them?

I got a set free a few years ago. Just had to write a review of how I used in classroom. I think there were 8 of them.

Since you have no idea what is in them you are simply ad hom'ing.. . We never tire of it, proceed.

I am familiar with John Stossel's body of work. Based on may familiarity with his body of work, I would object to my kid being required to watch anything created by him as part of some school assignment, just as I imagine others may object o their child being required to watch a Michael Moore video (or a speech from the head of state of the United States of America).

Edit: Are you spokesman for everyone on the board, or do you just have a mouse in your pocket.

Additionally, it is not rational for one to be required to assess on the merits everything an individual publishes. If Hitler came out with a book tomorrow on "the Jewish Problem" I need not thoughtfully consider the merits of his arguments. It would be sufficient to dismiss him out of hand as a sociopathic, megalomaniac genocidal anti-Semite.

Yet many were required to watch the Goreacle's video, as well as F911 and a few others.

You have no evidence whatsoever that these videos have anything to do with his political view.

As I said, it is simply an ad hom because you don't know what is in the videos. My guess is it isn't that political as Huffpo would have long ago had a fit about them while ignoring the Goreacle's videos and other nonsense foisted onto the children during their propaganda sessions.

Funny how I never heard you complain about the inconvenient truth (;) ) of the propaganda flick of Goreacle's in the shools, but you would about these ones that so far no liberal group has made any concerted effort to stop although we know they've been around for at least 8 months.

To the above, yes....and as for the rest...I don't think I'd quite equate Hitler (or even Michael Moore) with John Stossel. That's quite a stretch, DYT?

He's the guy who got waylaid by some prefessional wrestler a bunch a years back for claiming wrestling was fake, right?

What a load of fringe horseshit.

Check out these "class room discussions" that come with the video, and check out the teabagger loaded language in the "lesson plan".

The minimum wage in one of the least controversial laws ever passed. It enjoys overwhelming, and close to universal support.

Only a fringe, Lyndon Larouche teabagger would set up a "lesson plan" to suggest there is a legitimate, or widespread "dissent" against the minimum wage.

Any politician who ever ran on a national platform to abolish the minimum wage would get smoked in an electoral blow out of epic proportions.

streaming Video from John Stossel

Each month, we post new streaming video from John Stossel on issues that we believe students will find interesting and thought-provoking. Click the link below to view this month's featured video. After viewing the video, take a look at our discussion questions to pursue the ideas in the video further.

"Minimum Wage" Ideas for Further Discussion in Classroom:

1. Summarize what John is saying about minimum wage. Do you believe minimum wage could hurt some potential workers? Why or why not?

2. If you believe what John says about the minimum wage, would that mean that any minimum wage—no matter what the level—would hurt at least some potential workers?

3. Do you think there should be a minimum wage? If so, at what level? Why?

4. What do you think motivates politicians to pass minimum wage laws? What motivates unions to lobby for them?

5. Do you think you've ever been a victim of minimum wage laws? Have you ever benefited from minimum wage rules?

LOL, yep. I made it a point to be sure and watch that one when I heard about it. Seriously, there seems to be a few things where I can make mathematical connections with the kids on in these. I thought it would be a good "interest perker" for certain kids who otherwise don't pay any....attention that is.

"Dr. D" David Shultz was the one who hit him. I was always afraid of that guy. Supposedly Stossel still has lingering affects from that blow to his ear.

Yes, but I am speaking to a specific audience. When speaking to a Muslim it is best to quote the Koran, ya know?

Now now now.

Anyone familiar with Stossel's name know which side of the Political fence he comes down on.
Yes. Again, I said...

"You have no idea if these videos cover his political opinion, therefore this is an ad hom based in ignorance"

The reality is, if they were overtly political Huffpo, the ACLU or some other political entity would have been all over them like white on rice by now. These videos have been out for a while.

Now I'm not saying this directly in response to the questions Stossel laid out here because someone could questions in front of me that I'd have the same response to. But in theory isn't this idea what we want taught in schools, challenging kids to think? For example politicians who want to reduce drug sentences etc. often get smoked (no pun intended) politically for being labeled soft on crime but does that mean we wouldn't want kids to have a discussion on ways to deal with drugs other than just throwing people in jail?

I'm just wondering what he could possibly contribute? To math, especially.

Basically his only expertise is to make journalistic segments with a huge libertarian bias.

If I were the Desh or Watermark version of Libertarians I would say, "Reality has a Libertarian bias!"

And if I were the Watermark version only I would continue on to say, "All socialist liberals need to be hung from the highest tree!"

He just doesn't have a background in education. All it looks like is some cheap libertarian propaganda attempt.

Libertarian arguments sound compelling until you actually look at them for more than five seconds, so if all he's going to do is pound kids with the libertarian arguments and present no other side (which would automatically intellectually destroy the libertarian side in pretty much all instances) he should be banned from American classrooms.
