Conservatives why no war on Christmas this year?

No, you should just say Happy Holidays unless you know the person well enough to know what they celebrate. Why wish people a merry X-mas when you know a certian percentage dont celebrate such a thing?

because its a federal and state holiday....

whats next, we can't wish people happy 4th because they're not us citizens and we had better ask to see their citizenship card before we say happy 4th....

Right. Live in fear of "offending" people by wishing them to be happy. I worry about that all the time and stuff....

Who is living in fear of offending someone?

Its not about being afraid of offending someone, its not even that anyone gets offended.... Its about not wanting to look like a fool myself, showing ignorance of believing that everyone is just like you!

Whatever. Does everyone in the world celebrate holidays on Dec. 25th and Jan 1st? I don't think so so by saying Happy Holidays you are assuming everyone is American like you and celebrates their Holiday at the same time you do. So you do look like a fool if you say Happy Holidays.

It depends on what you think a "huge drive" is.

When there were many court cases to remove the holiday from public buildings I can see how they might feel as if they were being attacked. If there aren't many of them this year I can see why they don't feel so besieged.

Now, when there were many court cases driven by specific groups I can very much again see how they might feel as if it was a concerted effort (a drive you might say). Add to that such symbolism as the Atheist sign in the Capital buildings and other things all at once.

As I said, if there were few court cases like this, less cities with the "be good for goodness sake" signs on buses, I could see why there would be less reaction from the Christians (read: conservatives). I am conservative, but I am not Christian.

I personally don't really care, we celebrate it as a way to teach the kids what the dominant religion believes so they don't misunderstand them later.

There are just as many court cases this year as any other year, its just that Fox News is not pulling them out of the woodwork and hyping the story. I am not sure why except that they dont have marching orders from the White House to do so!

The Mocked Up "War On Christmas" is excatly what they are talking about when they accuse the Conservatives of using religen as a wedge.

No, but almost everyone celebrateds new years and almost everyone celebrates a holiday this time of year.

I personally belive that anyone who says Merry Christmas to a mixed crowd or a stranger is showing ignorance or at the least an egotistical ethnocentric attitude about the world around them. (which is ignorance)

Not everyone celebrates New Years on Jan 1st. So are you not showing an ethnocentric attitude by assuming everyone celebrates it when you do?

The vast majority do and its not based on religous views. All of the Jewish people Ive ever known celebrate Jewish New Year and traditional Roman Calendar New Year.

When you wish a mixed crowd or someone you do no know, its arrogant, ignorant and ethnocentric.

It would be like walking down the street and randomly wishing people happy birthday regardless of if you know when there birthday is.... Id be like wishing a crowd that you are addressing "Happy Birthday"!

I already wrote that if you are giving a speech rule number one is know your audience so yes one would either not say anything at all or say Merry Christmas, Happy Hanekuah, Happy Kawnza or anything else. That's public speaking 101.

How about instead of saying happy holidays people just say hi? Does it make you feel superior or more politically correct to say happy holidays instead of hello?

From now on my standard greeting will be "Have a moderately comfortable December".

No need to get carried away.

This whole thing was hot a few years ago when some Conservatives got all offended because Wal-Mart required the employees to use the more enclusive "Happy Holidays" and were I the owner of a retail store, I would want to be more enclusive.

To All My Democrat Friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2010 but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that Americans are necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishee.

To All My Republican Friends:

So why does it being a federal and state holiday have to do with it? So we should show our ignorance by assuming all Americans celebrate it? If you walk by an Australian in your time zone it is afternoon.

If you walk by a Jew, it is Holiday time, but he is not likely to be planning on celebrating Christmas.

I wonder why they call the Republican Party "the Party of WhHite Christian Men". Good, keep margionalizing yourselves.... It will be good for the nation for your kind to slowly fade away!

I have to say, this is one of those areas of political correctness that I find a bit mind-boggling. Who cares what someone says to you, if the only intent is positive & to convey good wishes?

I don't care if a French guy comes up to me in July and says "Happy Bastille Day." For him, it's Bastille Day, and he's conveying that he wants me to enjoy the day as well, though I may not celebrate it like he does. Nothing more.

That's said, O'Reilly is definitely a fool....

I know what you're saying. It's definetly not the crime of the century to wish someone merry christmas, and I doubt that hardly anyone really gets too tweaked about it.

But the thing is, I can never understand what it feels like to walk in the shoes of a minority group. If some frenchman wished you happy bastille day, it would probably be the one and only time in your entire life that would ever happen.

From what I understand from Jewish friends, they sometimes feel as if they are outsiders looking in. They have to hear all the christmas stuff non-stop for like two months. It's not like some random, one-time event of a french dude wishing you bastille day. It's a constant barrage, a constant reminder that this nation to a large degree, recognizes and celebrates christianity. And that there is virtually zero attempt to honor or even remotely recognize the traditions of other religions in any public way. I have no idea what that feels like to a Jew, but I get the distinct impression that from some of the jewish friends I've talked to, it can feel a little weird for them.
