GOP attempt to stymie abortion in Ohio backfires spectacularly

Why would republicans want to make it harder to amend the Ohio constitution?
because they watched what happened in Michigan in 22......choosing to enshrine the killing of children in the state's constitution is a true sign that we are no longer civilized......

The will of the people has spoken. So long as you continue to demonize a woman's choice, you will lose every election.

Ohioans issued a major rebuke to Republican officials on Tuesday night.

Voters rejected a gambit to get ahead of an abortion rights vote this November.

The result illustrates that the GOP is still struggling to figure out how to talk about abortion post-Roe.
So goes Ohio. That's how a generation of political pundits used to respond to swing state's results on presidential election nights, knowing that it could almost reliably predict control of the White House. Ohio is much redder now, but Tuesday's results in an early face-off over abortion rights illustrate a much more troubling bellwether for the GOP.

Ohioans did not explicitly vote on abortion rights on Tuesday. Regardless, they sent a major rebuke to key state Republican leaders as they rejected an effort to get ahead of a November abortion vote.

That’s a common misconception about Ohio that it has become more right leaning. It’s not true. Ohio has become dominated by the GOP due to extreme gerrymandering (don’t believe me then look up Jim Jordan’s district) and because the Democratic Party has been incomprehensibly weak in Ohio due to, primarily, the weakness of the Democratic party’s national strategy,

It very much is still a bell weather State.

To your point about the national party, see guno’s follow post sh*tting on Ohio. Historically the Democratic base was more working class. Today it is dominated by coastal elites who share guno’s view (not telling you anything you don’t know.)

As you also know Columbus is one of the faster growing metropolitan areas in the country and fastest growing City in the Midwest. I’ve actually been working with two different institutional investors open to buying in Columbus and the growth there even surprised me.

Big Coastal cities are having problems of their own so glass houses and all when trying to crap on Ohio.

The Ohio rebuke follows other defeated efforts by Republicans to enact state restrictions on abortion in the wake of the Dobbs decision. Importantly, all these defeats have come in red or at least reddish states. They portend trouble for Republicans in 2024.
We can already foresee what the messaging will be from Democrats, and its reception by Republican and Independent women voters.

Ohio is jesusland of the Midwest, hillbillies and hicks came up on the hillbilly highways from WV and Kentucky in the 50's and 60's. The GOP got their hooks in the now half dead geezer rubes
Say what? Sorry Guno but you don’t crap about Ohio. We have always had emigrants from WV and KY since before Ohio was even a State. By god I was born and raised in rural west-central Ohio and one thing we are not is Hillbillies. Far from it. We may a lot of anal retentive conservative farmers and the Ohio River region of the State is Butternut country but hillbillies we definitely are not. There is a reason why Ohio has been a bellwether State for so many years, until recently, and that would have never been possible if we were what you described.

Buddy I’m telling you those would be fighting words in Ohio.

And would you look at that! They did it all by themselves! No pesky federal government! Ya know, if all 50 states voted for legal abortion, I'd be sad for all the murdered babies, but satisfied that the will of the (stupid) people had been done.

Why do you hate women? Why is an undifferentiated glop of cells more important to you than a woman’s life? Why does your love of life end when the baby is born and your actions show that your attitude about them is “Fuckem”?

Why are you so inconsistent about issues of life. Murdering thousands of innocent civilians in the immoral war in Iraq didn’t bother you. I mean fuck them to for being brown people right?

Why are you reading and willing to pull the lever on a criminal ending their life if you hold life so sacred?

Why the inconsistency and hypocrisy by you on this issue eh?

So according to you a fetus is sacred…until born and a fetus is far more important to you than any Iraqi’s life? Ehh? Why?

Another in a long line of questionable Republican tactics. They can't deliver a platform that the overwhelming majority in the nation demands. Instead, the Red states continue to find new and creative ways to suppress votes, make voting obsolete by safely redistricting, or in this case making sure the will of the people is never even addressed by state legislators.

If it weren't so sad, it would be comical. After doing away with August referendum votes, the Republicans in Ohio opted for a 'do over' for fear that the abortion issue would bring the masses out in November. So they hoped that this issue would just pass with flying colors in a low turnout cycle.

Sadly, thousands of Republicans will still allow these deranged individuals to retain power when they vote in November. They'll vote for the right to choice, and then vote for every Republican on the ticket.

Who will eventually figure out a way to deny the will of the people.

Groundhog Day, as it were.
Yea well their machinations backfired on them and this a pretty good indicator of how the November election in Ohio will go.

Whatsa a matter PiMP? You got the blues that the majority of Americans reject your immoral position that abortion should not be legal under any circumstances? LOL

True dat. Folks outside the State don’t understand just how independent minded us Buckeyes are. That’s why we’re a bellwether State.

You’re definitely right about Cbus. Particularly in the areas of Dublin(where I’m domiciled), Bexely, Upper Arlington, New Albany and Powell. In the last few years my assessment of my home has nearly doubled. The money I lost in the stock market during COVID was more than compensated for by the increase in property values.

My folks both went to UA High and they were back recently to visit my Uncle (who still lives in UA and unfortunately isn't doing well health wise) and they were talking about the growth. World class University and a more diverse workforce (in terms of types of businesses, not racial or ethnic). A lot going on. And you're right, politically Ohio has always been a bellwether.

Sorry to hear about your Uncle. I just lost my last one a few months ago.

I bet you wished you had listened to me a few years back just before COVID that Cbus was ripe for real-estate investment.

Cbus is a very diverse city both economically, racially and culturally as next to Chicago were the largest crossroads city in the Midwest.

Oh the Golden Bears... one of my best teaching friends and fellow swim coach is a UA Legend... he's passed now but no one loved that City more than he did... most people who live in Columbus or The Burbs really like it here... sorry your mom and dad had to come home under not the greatest circumstances.... we've got some pretty good hospitals here and hopefully that has meant at the very least good, comforting care for your uncle)

Great, now go out and spend your property value.

Let's hope. There is a refrendum vote on abortion, so there will be turnout. However, there will be plenty of Republican women who vote pro choice, and then vote straight Republican on the ballot.

And as we now see every day, there are myriad issues with problem pregnancies that threaten the life of the mother. Women are coming close to dying due to ridiculous Right Wing laws that are now being rammed through.
