Automakers have announced more than $120 billion in EV investments and 143,000 new US jobs in the last eight years, with more than 40% of those investments happening since the passage of the IRA, according to the Environmental Defense Fund.
Battery plants from US and foreign automakers like Nissan and Mercedes-Benz are being built in states like Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.
Legacy automakers are pivoting to electric vehicles in response to expected strong consumer demand, tougher environmental regulations both from US states and foreign countries, and a push from Wall Street.

Electric vehicles have outpaced growth of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in recent years. More than 50% of shoppers were interested in buying an EV, according to a Cox survey this summer. Fifty-three perecent of consumers said that EVs will eventually replace ICE-powered vehicles.
As a result of consumer demand, General Motors has set a goal of phasing out the sale of all internal combustion vehicles by 2035, and Ford has said it hopes EVs make up almost half of its sales by 2030. GM even changed its logo to look like an electrical plug.
"For a major manufacturer to bet that the future of transportation is ICE-powered vehicles seems like a tougher and tougher case to make," said Rabe.

Both Ford and Toyota are getting out of EVs. They've already announced it. They are losing too much money on them. Toyota is the largest automotive manufacturer on the planet. Tesla is a drop in the bucket.

Toyota wants to stick with hybrids that sell well for them and develop fuel cell vehicles. My bet is, they will like Honda before them, succeed and then turn the market making EV's a dead end.

One big reason Toyota won't go in on the EV is they sell their cars to the world not just the US or Europe. That means they are selling cars in countries that are decades from having some sort of EV charging structure and even further from having mechanics and technicians that can work on them. They recognize if they want to sell cars there they have to be ones that can meet the local conditions and requirements, not what the US or Europe demands.

This is Toyota's plan. The hybrid, however, is just a gasoline car in the end. They do well in stop and go traffic, but put 'em on the freeway and they are no bit worse mileage of a gasoline car. The problem with the battery still remains such as fire hazard, weight (though not as much), etc. The battery is not as large, and this plays well into the hybrid's design. The fire hazard is correspondingly less as well as the weight.
I think Toyota is eventually going to discover that fuel cells have more problems than EVs, but I guess they figure they've gotta try. At least the ballasting battery is smaller for a fuel cell vehicle.

In any case, trying to build a car to 'save the planet' is impractical, since the planet does not need 'saving'. It's quite big enough to take care of itself. Any modern gasoline engine is burning pretty clean these days, and they are a lot more efficient than EVs or fuel cells.

It doesn't matter how much CO2 is emitted.
First, it's a drop in the proverbial bucket,
Second, it's a naturally occurring gas that is absolutely essential for life to exist on Earth,
Third, it is converted to oxygen and carbohydrates by plants,
Fourth, it has absolutely NO EFFECT on the temperature of the Earth. You cannot create energy out of nothing.
Carbon dioxide is also used to make sodas, beer, fire extinguishers, dry ice (it's Halloween season!), synthetic fuel, and is a useful welding gas.
