Coakley Risks Offending Red Sox Nation, Calls Schilling 'Another Yankee Fan'

In such a close race, anything could tip the balance, and Massachusetts is devoted to its baseball team, especially after it reversed years of bad fortune in 2004 by defeating the Yankees in the playoffs and going on to win the World Series with Schilling's help.

The gaffe came in a talk radio interview Friday night. Coakley, who is vying to fill the late Ted Kennedy's Senate seat, took a swipe at former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for dropping in Massachusetts to campaign for the Republican candidate, Scott Brown. Giuliani is well known as a Yankees fan.

But Coakley hit a foul ball when the show's host, Dan Rea, noted that Schilling is supporting Brown.

"And another Yankee fan," she said, apparently stunning Rea.

Scandalous!

For this reason alone, Massachusetts voters should vote to put a quick end to the healthcare bill....

I don't like the h/c bill. But "issues" like this are BS. It doesn't say anything about how out of touch or stupid she is or may be; because she doesn't know sports? That's silly.

The truly sad thing is that some voters actually take stuff like this seriously...

We talked about it in the other thread but I'm assuming you know what the Red Sox mean to the people of Massachusetts. You don't have to be a big sports fan to know about the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry when you live there. So calling out a Red Sox hero because he supports your opponent and accusing him of being a Yankee is like treason. It's just freaking dumb.

I think she proved she's really not too bright. You have to admit it makes her look rather dimwitted. I know for sure if it had been Sarah Palin making such a dumb thing, you'd have no problem seeing it for what it was.

RedSoxGate!

I have to agree with the principle that is it very sad things like this can actually affect an election. But the reality is it DOES

On the other hand politicians DO know that small things like this do have an effect. The unfortunate reality is politics these days is more about a popularity contest and not so much about actually ability to do the job. Dissing a local sports hero for supporting your opponent is not a very bright move, indicating the quality of candidates we have to choose from is rapidly declining.

why did you make the big stink about the h/c bill if you don't like it?

and the sports thing? get real onceler.....that in fact show how in touch or out of touch she is. do you know what "in touch" means? are you so naive that you think all voters don't care if she made such a gaffe? are you going to ignore the out of touch gaffes that obama capitalized on with mccain? i am willing to wager real dollars you never said boo about obama capitalizing on mccain's "out of touch" comments, such as his houses. or will you actually be honest, for once, and admit you said nothing about obama ragging on mccain about the houses.....

you claim to be this non partisan or neutral poster.....let's start seeing it

This is the same sort of contempt dems show black American's who are conservative by calling them "Uncle Tom's".

The people (dems) who claim they are for diversity never mean diversity of thought.

I barely even know what you're talking about. I thought it was the media that went after McCain's houses.

It doesn't matter; I'd never start a thread over something so stupid - an inane non issue - like you do...

"When asked by the Globe why she wasn't out stumping like Brown, she fired back: “As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?'"

this is the remarks of someone grossly out of touch.
joakley thought she was going to have the seat for the taking and now she is paying for it.
