If Venezuela is plotting to seize control of Guyana one reason could be that in 2015 ExxonMobil (EM) discovered
HUGE crude oil reserves located about 120 miles off the Guyana shoreline. The crude oil reserves that EM found were located in what the company called The "Stabrock BlocK', this 'block' covered an area of about 6.6 million acres. These discoveries of crude oil in 2015 were the first clues that Guyana was about to embark on an oil revolution.
To date (Nov, 2023) EM have crude oil discoveries by EM have uncovered the equivalent of a mammoth
11.2 BILLION (recoverable) barrels of good quality crude oil.
This means that little Guyana - which has a population of only 805,000 people - is now destined to become a
bone fide 'Petrostate" in the Major League (OPEC).

I find it a tremendous irony that there are rumours of Maduro scheming to annex Guyana. Maduro, it seems to me, realises that Guyana is a little nation that will soon be worl "Petrostate." because one of the biggest factors in Venezuela's spectacular downfall was the paradoxical economic syndrome that economists call 'Dutch Disease". (Actually, it was "Dutch Disease" super-charged by the sheer stupidity of authoritarian socialism). 'Dutch Disease" begins when there is a boom in market for a valuable commodity 9especially a non-renewable one like crude oil0. So, you know that oil was first discovered in Venezuela in the 1920s. The country was found to have massive reserves of crude. In 1998 Hugo Chavez the revolutionary social was elected President of Venezuela. In the year 2000 there was boom in the global oil market due to the emerging BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) economies. The price of crude oil rose. Chavez said, "YIPEE !" and focussed 100% on exporting as much crude as he could. Before he died of cancer in 2013, around 95% of Venezuela's export revenue was in the form of petrodollars. The good times were rolling with the boom and Chavez spent like a drunken soldier on costly socialist "social programs" (cranking up the national debt, just like your Democrats do)), he also neglected to maintain any other domestic production from sector like manufacturing, industry, agriculture, etc; and allowed Venezuela to become totally dependent on imports, and legion other stupidities. This was sustainable provided the boom-time (roughly from 2000 to 2009) "petrodollars kept rolling in.
But you'll never guess what ! The oil boom turned into a bust in 2014, and suddenly El Presidente Maduro found he didn't have enough "petrodollars"coming in to cover the damage Chavez had inflicted on the country's economy by spending like a drunken soldier during the oil boom years, becoming dependent on foreign imports and letting the rest of his country's non-boom (oil) production sectors atrophy.
The upshot of this economic disaster is that Venezuela today is a major
(MAJOR) shit-hole, that is about one inch away from officially becoming a 'failed state" (like Syria, the democratic Republic of Congo or South Africa).
So, if Nicolas maduro is planning to invade and annex Guyana for its oil, that's ironic. Someone should tell him that socialist dickheads like himself should have learned by now to keep clear of crude because they don't have the brains to manage a valuable commodity like oil in the wise manner that it demands. And not just that, if you don't it's guaranteed to get you in "a shit-load of trouble."
