The two party system is harming America.

We need reform to get beyond this system, no parties or more parties, but having two is producing poor results.


We have two likely nominees who are both to old for the job, who offer limited fresh ideas and who do not represent much from the newer generations. The infighting is stalling out the government and the Republican thirst for what they claim is vengeance is weakening the rule of law.


Its gotten to the point that if prosecution of Trump is unsuccessful it will be clear that Presidents and former presidents are above the law and would be free to do almost anything they chose.


Is rank voting the solution? Maybe reforms that help a third party get some traction?

Any ideas?

I don't think the problem is the number of parties, the problem is the people in the parties are not willing to work together.

I disagree, there are more than two sides to every issue, but as it stands now, we are presented with two very polarized sides to every issue, the result is a binary system in a multifaceted world.

More than two parties would force coalitions for governance and result in compromise and more issues getting addressed.
 
The more widely liked candidate form all sides would be more likely to be elected. Less polarizing. NOt so much of a win/lose situation.

First I don't think every issue has more than two sides to it and I dont think how many sides there are to an issue has any bearing on the number of parties. That's just hoping something different would work better. Two parties worked fine for 200 years all of a sudden it's a problem. Greater and deeper divisions have been created in this country recently.

So we can't get 2 parties to work at a solution to something you think adding more people in will solve that? I seriously doubt that.

We have not had a 2 party system for 200 years, study history.

I did not say every issue has more than two sides.

Most issues, if not all, are multifaceted. Name an issue and I suspect I can show more than two takes on it.

It may well be but if we can't make 2 work we sure as hell will struggle mightily to make more work. I don't believe having more voices added to a discussion forces people to work together. A willingness to work together is whats needed. Having 3, 4 or 5 groups unwilling to work together doesn't sound like a winning recipe to me.

Make people smarter so they don't nominate garbage candidates year after year?

When's the last time we had a high quality 3rd party candidate? For 2024, the prominent 3rd party candidate is a known conspiracy theorist because, you know, Trump and Biden just weren't bad enough....
