This Senator was severly beaten by South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks due to his anti-segreagationist views......

In 1856!

Guess Dixie never heard of the guy! Yup it seems the North was as serious about the Segregation issue as the South!

The beating as so severe it took YEARS of therapy for the guy to be able to return to the Sennate!

Sumner was a Republican gentleman and Brooks was a Democrat thug. Not much has changed.

The parties have changed a lot, you are correct.

Brooks was a shining example of a South Carolina polititian a state that only supported Democrats back then..... Now days they only support Republicans, not much has changed but the name of the party they support.

But to Rise above Party Politics for a few moments..... my point is that the desegregation issue was so hot in Congress in 1855 it led to a well known historical physical fight that Dixie seems completly ignorant of!

Sumner was a Boston Elitist whose politics I support, much like John Kerry!

How exactly did the parties change?

Dude, first of all it wasn't desegregation but the ugly stain of slavery along with free market economics. Secondly, the debate caused not a single beating but eventually a Civil War when the Democrat Party realized that they had lost the argument.

Summers wanted the rich plantations all broken up and the land divided between the slaves and poor white people. What a beautiful man. Too bad Lincoln was too weak for that - America would be a decent place to live right now.

South Carolina supported only Democrats back in the 1850's and only Republicans now.

What has changed, South Carolina or the parties?

Mass supported only Republicans in 1850's and only Democrats (for the most part) now, what has changed, Mass or the parties?

All of the South supported only Democrats in the 1800's and supports (for the most part) only Republicans now.... Interesting!

The 'rats are still racist but changed tactics. The one they chose is admittedly brilliant since their former slaves now support them while still being kept at the bottom rung.
