California Restaurants Cut Jobs as Fast-Food Wages Set to Rise

"Loose"?

Guess what? They're already paying fast food people twice the federal minimum wage here in this relatively low cost of living region, because otherwise they can't hire anyone. Nursing home aides are making more per hour than I made as a licensed nurse before I retired (14 years ago). Same reason.

$20/hour in California isn't squat. Here's an idea: if you feel so bad for these fast food joints, stop cooking at home and eat out every meal. Super size your meals. Please. lol
The profit margin on soda is about 900%. They can certainly afford to pay a living wage.

I'm looking forward to Easter because it will be a healthy eating hiatus for the day. I'm debating if I should get a small cake or a pie for the day. Just as long as there are no tempting leftovers because it's right back to healthy eating the next day.

Maybe just pick up a couple of pretty decorated cupcakes at the bakery, one for you, one for Mom? Or a couple of fancy cookies?

My little retirement job is a pretty good gig for me. Keeps me busy, a little extra bucks, social interaction. All of that.

It’s a deli section of a supermarket chain. Hot and cold case stuff. Fried chicken, salads, sandwiches type thing. No brainer stuff. I don’t know the wage range because it’s none of my business, but probably $15-18/hr. In Idaho. That’s probably higher than the $20 in California. Most of the employees are kids. 25 and under.

I would probably fire most, maybe all, if I had the authority to do so. Lazy. Sloppy. Unable to take direction. Come in hung over, lack of sleep, possibly high. Make the same fucking mistakes over and over. Only the adults have their shit together.

But, they need bodies. Warm bodies, no matter how shitty they are because nobody wants to work for that pay.

Know what these kids might have to do? Move in with mom and dad. Ride the bus instead of their cars. Give up booze, cigs, vaping, tats and piercings. Poor fucking victims.

I know someone else who, in retirement even though he's worth a bunch, took a PT job at the Walmart deli near his very, very nice home -- for the human interaction. He loves it. He has a gregarious salesman personality, which is how he made his wealth. He also says the same thing about some of the younger ppl they've hired.

Glad you like it there! I bet the customers like it as well.

So you believe that thugs -- as you think of these "kids" who you picture as non-white -- will go straight if only they could work at Jack in the Box for $9/hour. :rofl2:
Who said anything about race? Oh! That was you making racist stereotype comments. You RACIST.

:dasracist:

BTW: I worked in fast food when I was a kid as did several of my friends. It taught me that I never wanted to make a career in Fast Food :rofl2:

There are always multiple factors at play. Is pay for every 'low paying' job suppose to be geared towards someone who is 40 years old trying to support a family? Are kids who work summer jobs or get their first jobs at 16 suppose to be paid 'a living wage with benefits'?

The gov't forcing an increase like this allows those who have a job to earn more money. The trade off is less jobs as employers cut back hours and lay off workers as well as go more to automation, and an increase in the cost of what they are selling to consumers.

I've said several times before that there should be some qualifiers for that wage level.

Like employees must be 18 or over to be eligible. Or even 21 or over.

Must be the head of a household with dependents.

Must work at least 32 hours per week.

Company has to have a minimum number of employees so little mom & pop companies don't get slammed.

If a job can't support the working person, should it exist?

Because many people are in positions where getting a job that pays something is perfectly acceptable. For example, if you are 16 and get a job, you don't have to support yourself, your parents still do that. You get experience with work and some spending money.

Someone who cannot, or will not, get a job that pays more than minimum wage over a lifetime of work is either a moron or a fool. Morons simply don't get paid more because they can't do more. They have no inherent "right" to a "living wage." Fools have even less right to one.

LOT's of kids work in Fast Food. Now in your world adults work there and try to support their 7 kids from different dead beat dads on what they make.

You sure make up some fantastical stories, like ivermectin cures COVID, Trump is the best president in U.S. history, and you're a doctor, lawyer, epidemiologist, and economist. Have you ever thought of writing for the Ron DeSantis Children's Library of Trumpism, girlie? lol

Reasonable qualifications. I agree with that. It doesn't need to be one size fits all. It's not like that with min. wage in my state (Michigan).

I definitely get what you are saying but the challenge is when so many caveats, even well intentioned ones, are put in place it becomes so unwieldy to enforce. You need a massive new bureaucracy to track and verify and make sure everyone is on the up and up.

Most businesses in this country are small businesses; many of them mom and pop, many of them run by immigrants. Yet reading this thread you might think everyone is multi-national billion dollar corporation for whom money is no issue. Many of these small mom and pops don't have big venture capitalists behind them or a rich Uncle funding them. They take out a loan or use their life savings and max out credit cards. Some end up doing really well and others put food on the table for their family but aren't rich by any means. And these gov't mandates only put more pressure on them.

Bingo.

The type of kid who is willing to work at McDonalds for shit wages is not the type of kid who will resort to crime.

Thanks. They kinda do. At least they get someone who can communicate with them a bit. And is reliable for the employer.

Show me a single post where I have ever said Ivermectin cures COVID. Why are Libratards such liars. :rofl2:

Here's where a high minimum wage meets reality:
