America's retirement age of 65 is "crazy," BlackRock CEO says

Work till you drop, hell raise the retirement age to 80?!!

With Americans living longer and spending more years in retirement, the nation's changing demographics are "putting the U.S. retirement system under immense strain," according to BlackRock CEO Larry Fink in his annual shareholder letter.

One way to fix it, he suggests, is for Americans to work longer before they head into retirement.

"No one should have to work longer than they want to. But I do think it's a bit crazy that our anchor idea for the right retirement age — 65 years old — originates from the time of the Ottoman Empire," Fink wrote in his 2024 letter, which largely focuses on the retirement crisis facing the U.S. and other nations as their populations age.

Fink's suggestions about addressing the nation's retirement crisis come amid a debate about the future of Social Security, which will face a funding shortfall in less than a decade. Some Republican lawmakers have proposed raising the retirement age for claiming Social Security benefits, arguing, like Fink, that because Americans are living longer, they should work longer, too.

But that ignores the reality of aging in the workplace, with the AARP finding in a 2022 survey that the majority of workers over 50 say they face ageism at work. And because of ill health or an unexpected job loss, many older Americans stop working before they planned to. In fact, the median age of retirement in the U.S. is 62 — even lower than the "traditional" retirement age of 65.

Fink is right in saying that the retirement system isn't working for most households, noted retirement expert and New School of Research professor Teresa Ghilarducci told CBS MoneyWatch. But his assessment that people should work longer misses the mark, she added.

"After a 40-year-old experiment of a voluntary, do-it-yourself-based pension system, half of workers have no easy way to save for retirement," she said. "And in rich nations, why isn't age 65 a good target for most workers to stop working for someone else?"

She added, "Working longer won't get us out of this. Most people don't retire when they want to, anyway."

I retired at 60, not because I am rich but because I live a frugal minimalist lifestyle, and I have other interests I want to pursue while I can.

The claim is complete BS....we dont have the jobs to allow people to work past 65....it simply destroys employment opportunities for the young...also employers dont want old people for multiple reasons.

What bullshit.

I retired at 55.

I think the retirement age should be fifty [although I was ready by 35].

How do we pay for that?

Let the smart people figure that out.
We could try electing some.

There are more unfilled jobs than there are unemployed people.

People are living longer lives. Reasons to me you either need to work longer or live a more frugal lifestyle during your peak earning years to be able to retire earlier.

It’s understandable people want to have fun and go all YOLO while young but there’s often a trade off that comes with it.

LOL. Smart people will tell you it’s not possible because they understand reality.

Huckster politicians will tell you it’s possible and someone else will pay for it. That’s who we elect to office.

While the full retirement age may be 66, 70% of Americans take their Social Security early; many as soon as possible at 62. That has drained the SS system plus puts most of those people at relatively low incomes.

Consumption is being forced way down by the New Slavers and AI will slash the need for humans....there is no prospect of having enough jobs to allow people to work past 65....in order to give the young something to do so that they dont collapse the society in rage most likely we will be forced to go the other way....make working past 60 illegal for most.

Yeah, it's great for those who choose (and can afford) to retire early but unfortunately, to your point, a number of these folks probably aren't financially prepared for what's to come.

If the Regime wants to demand that people work past 65 they absolutely need end their open borders program...we already dont have enough jobs to do it... open borders makes the problem far worse.

Retirement seems like such an individual thing now - most companies don't have pensions. I feel like people can dictate it for themselves.

Personally, I can't see ever just chilling & golfing. I like to work.

I suggest talking to white guys over 55....or even 50 now....who have attempted to gain employment suitable for their qualifications in recent years.

What would older white guys tell us about their job searches that would differ from someone of any other race or ethnicity?

Edit: I'm over 50 and I keep my eyes out for opportunities. What am I experiencing as a white male that I should be aware of?

"If the regime wants people to work past 65..." By regime you mean people who understand S.S. as currently construed isn't sustainable and changes need to be made including increasing the retirement age? Is that what you mean?

Illegals work mostly in agriculture and construction. I'm not an expert on construction but I don't usually see a large number of older people doing construction work. Illegal women often work in jobs like cleaning hotels and people's homes. They aren't jobs most/almost any older American desires or would do.

In case you were thinking of retiring some day, bad news from Janet Yellen:

Social Security and Medicare are now underfunded by $175 trillion.

That comes to roughly $1.4 million per American household.

There are only 3 solutions:
- slash beneficiaries
- massively hike taxes, or
- cut everybody’s benefit to poverty level.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Raising the retirement age will not solve the problem, and will cause massive new problems.
